The milestone of former President Jair Bolsonaro’s 100 days under house arrest has triggered a new political attack by allies.
One of the high-profile demonstrations was by Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro. He tried to incorporate his father’s situation into a narrative of persecution, labeling him as “Brazil’s greatest political leader” who has been “arrested and censored without charge or conviction.”
For senators, the “system” is working to silence Mr. Bolsonaro for fear that he will become a strong name in the 2026 presidential election.
When Flavio mentions this “system,” the story returns to attempts to discredit the judiciary. This “system” only works to comply with the law, given the evidence collected.
But the truth is, it’s a hopeless scenario for the far right. Bolsonaro’s support is now unwavering, even in Congress.
While the Bolsonaro family seeks to overturn the legal conclusion, the real-world debate has shifted to where the convicted former president will serve his sentence.
Federal District Deputy Governor Selina León claimed in an interview that Papuda prison was “not in a position to receive Mr. Bolsonaro” due to his “advanced age” and need for a “special diet.”
Ultimately, the former president’s final whereabouts will be up to Minister Alexandre de Moraes. And given the facts, the Bolsonaro family should consider that they need to prepare the ground for a future free of myths and avoid exposing everyone to the political negativism that is affecting them. This guy knocks on the door.
