When will Mr. Bolsonaro begin serving his 27 years and three months in prison for crimes including coup d’etat, violent abolition of democracy, criminal organization, and damage to public property? The only person who knows is Minister Alexandre de Moraes, who will report the case to the Federal Supreme Court. If only I knew.
Mr. Moraes inspected all the locations but encountered problems. No one wants to give Bolsonaro shelter. No one. Mr. Bolsonaro has become a thorn in the side of even those on the right – provided, of course, that they can inherit Mr. Bolsonaro’s votes. Without Bolsonaro’s blessing, the right’s performance in 2026 will be weak.
But if Mr. Moraes is forced to welcome Mr. Bolsonaro into his barracks, the army will do so reluctantly. Bolsonaro is synonymous with trouble for the military, which supported him in 2018 and 2022 and gave little support to the coup attempt. Even though they were scorched, they jumped over a fairly large fire.
The federal police, who hosted Mr. Lula in Curitiba for 580 days, do not want to hear that they did the same with Mr. Bolsonaro. Lula is a gentle and playful prisoner who quickly makes friends with the guards. One of them is now part of his government team. When Bolsonaro was president, he wanted to intervene with federal police.
Why not have Mr. Bolsonaro serve his sentence in Papuda, a high-security prison a short distance from his home? Prominent politicians such as Paulo Maruf, José Dirceu, José Genoino, Valdemar Costa Neto, Gueder Vieira Lima and Natan Donadón passed through Papuda. They must have good memories.
The one person who doesn’t want Bolsonaro in Papuda is Federal District Governor Ibanez Rocha. Neither is it in Papdinya, the headquarters of the military police battalion that follows Ibanez’s orders. On January 8, 2023, the prime minister went to Torre Poderes Square with the coup leaders. Ibanez thought it would be a walk in the park.
Ibanez told Metropol that he was not aware of Bolsonaro’s health status and therefore did not know whether the Papuda government would be able to accommodate him.
“I don’t know what’s going on with him. I haven’t visited him and we’re not friends. I don’t know if he’s in prison and can survive on the food he gets there.”
aren’t they friends? You too, Ibanez?
Ibanez referred the matter to his deputy, Selina Leon, who said:
“Mr. Papuda is not in a position to accept Mr. Bolsonaro. He has special dietary needs, he is old, and he is a former president. If he is well taken care of, he will live a long life.”
Ibanez, from the MDB, supported Bolsonaro even before his arrest and needs his help to get elected to the Senate next year. Mr. Celina is from the PP and supports Mr. Bolsonaro, and he also needs Mr. Bolsonaro’s support in the gubernatorial election. Ibanez and Serena secured their seats in the Senate on tickets offered to Michel Bolsonaro.
For Bolsonaro, papda not only represents the ultimate humiliation, but is also an undrinkable bitter wine. Thank you for understanding Ibaneis and Celina. You’ll know how to pay it back at the right time.
