One of Brazil’s most defining crimes of the 2000s returned to the minds of Internet users this Wednesday (12/11) after the release of the documentary Caso Eloá: Refém ao Vivo, which investigates the details of the 2008 kidnapping of Eloá Pimentel.
The Netflix production featured previously unpublished testimonies from the shooting victims’ parents, siblings, and close friends. However, Nayara Rodriguez, one of the most important people in the case, does not appear in the film.

The murdered 15-year-old girl’s best friend was also held in a private prison by Lindenberg Alves for four days before the kidnapping, which was followed extensively by the media at the time.
The teenage boy was deeply affected by the incident. Nayara, who was present when Eloa was murdered, was also shot dead by the gunman and is currently serving his sentence in Tremembe.

Nowadays, Nayara lives a low-key life and rarely appears in interviews. The young woman last appeared in public in 2012, attending the trial of Lindenberg, who was sentenced to 98 years in prison.
According to relatives and acquaintances on social media, the victim graduated from the Faculty of Engineering and is still living in ABC São Paulo. In 2018, Nayara was awarded R$150,000 in compensation by a São Paulo court. The court found the military police negligent in allowing her to be returned to captivity even though she had already been released by her kidnappers.
Four days later, Lindenberg shot Eloa in the head and Nayara in the mouth. The two were rescued by military police and given medical treatment, but Eloa did not resist. The deceased victim sustained no injuries and was confirmed to have died from brain death.
In a 2008 interview with Fantastico, Nayara revealed that the gunman had not yet fired when police entered the compound where the young women were being held. “Sometimes I feel resigned to what happened to her, but sometimes I just can’t wrap my head around it. There’s no reason. Why did this happen to her?” she said at the time.
Why isn’t Nayara featured in a Netflix documentary?
In an interview with big citydirector Chris Gattas and producer Veronica Stumpf of the Netflix documentary Caso: Elóa explained the reason for Nayara’s absence. For them, this crime remains like an open wound in the victim’s life.
“I think she’s still hurting. This subject remains very sensitive for her and we respect that,” the director explained. “We invited and looked for all the people (involved in the incident), but Nayara preferred not to participate,” she added.
