Kim Kardashian, Sarah Paulson, Naomi Watts and Niecy Nash arrived in Rio last Monday. The actresses attended the premiere of “Everything is Fair,” a legal drama produced by Hulu and aired on Disney Plus. A day after the event at the Copacabana Palace, the quartet spoke exclusively to ELA about the female dilemmas that pervade the world of the series.
Kim Kardashian plays her first lead role, Alura Grant, a divorce lawyer who owns a large firm specializing in women. Although this influencer has a law degree, she is not yet practicing law as she has not passed the BAR exam, which is a type of exam for the US OAB.
“(Taking this series) obviously didn’t help me (studying for the bar exam), but going to law school helped me build an allura to understand what I was saying and understand the terminology,” Kim commented. “I really want to pursue a career in law. I hope so.”
Professional critics were unfavorable not only to the series but also to the socialite’s acting. “Negative reviews? I haven’t heard anything about that,” Kim said with a degree of sarcasm when speaking about it to the audience attending the series premiere.
Niecy Nash plays Detective Emrald, a single mother of three children. The actress claims that she relied on her own experiences to build the character.
“I also have three children who have had to go through some very difficult days. A lot of people focus on the fun and funny side[of motherhood]but it’s what they call ‘clown tears’. You don’t want people to see your problems and what you’re really going through,” she says.
Sarah Paulson plays the villain of the plot. “I feel bad for her, but I also think she did this because she wasn’t chosen by the women who were starting their own companies. They told her she wasn’t good enough to be part of the group,” the 50-year-old actress said, also reflecting on the beauty pressures older women often face in Hollywood.
“Being a woman means facing the passage of time in public while others feel entitled to know what you’ve done to your face and what changes have occurred. It’s hard to deal with that when you already have so many feelings about it. But, of course, growing older is a privilege, and dying is another option.”
Naomi Watts plays Liberty, an attorney at a law firm and a partner to Kim’s character. The actress warns about the emotional and financial dependence of women in some marriages.
“I think love is love. And women have been told that they can’t have ambition and have to rely on men. This drama shows that women should take responsibility for their own lives and pursue what they deserve, both financially and emotionally. I think this is a powerful message, because there are many women who have lost their way,” says the actress.
