Mirco Casale: Trump’s woes (no government, but in debt)

Written by Mirko Casale*I Translated by Jair de Sousa**

This expression also applies to his previous term, but President Trump is in the midst of the worst period of his presidency, or indeed his presidency. That’s because he has been in charge of the White House for less than a year, starting his second term this year.

Current concerns include the longest government shutdown in history, an unstoppable surge in public debt, electoral setbacks across the country, and plummeting public opinion polls. A panorama showing how Trumpism 2.0 is accelerating America’s systemic crisis rather than resolving it.

here we go!

It seems that someone has placed a curse on President Trump, who has been hit by one crisis after another.

First, the president surpassed his personal record for the longest government shutdown in history, set during his previous term. Full-fledged executive segregation may sound like a good thing to Trumpian liberals, but it has become a major headache for the American president.

The failure of Republicans and Democrats to approve a new budget in late September continued into November, directly impacting the lives of millions of Americans.

Approximately 750,000 federal employees were placed on unpaid leave, and because this is a “land of opportunity,” some had their pay suspended, but their jobs were not reduced. In other words, given the government shutdown, workers considered essential must continue to work for free.

Museums, national parks, social food programs, and daycare centers were closed. But air traffic control, for example, which is considered essential, has been particularly affected, with security guards and air traffic controllers not keen on working for free, and many not showing up for work or showing up late without an appointment, resulting in long flight delays.

During the government shutdown, Americans were seen lining up to receive food from various social programs, which were also affected by the shutdown. The vicious cycle paints a surprisingly fragile picture for a country that is not subject to any sanctions or blockades and prides itself as a leading global economy.

The impact of this strike still needs to be assessed, but a simple comparison with the strike seven years ago suggests losses could reach $13 billion.

And it’s not because the US is in a position to absorb a lot of losses. Donald Trump says this country is much richer because of tariffs on imported goods, but these tariffs are not paid by other countries, but by Americans themselves.

Meanwhile, the U.S. public debt is about 120% of GDP, already more than $38 trillion, an all-time high. What’s even more serious is that despite all the cuts and austerity announced, the debt has not gone down as much during his time in the White House as it did under President Joe Biden, but has increased at a faster pace.

Under Democratic administrations, the country went into debt at a rate of about $6 billion per day; under Republican administrations, that amount averages closer to $7 billion per day.

Given this context, we shouldn’t be too surprised by the series of electoral struggles Republicans have suffered in recent weeks. Mayoral and gubernatorial elections were held in several cities and states.

And Democrats won every election celebrated. New Jersey, Virginia, Cincinnati, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Atlanta were also among them. Opponents of Trump also won votes on election reform in California and judicial reform in Pennsylvania.

Indeed, the most talked about victory in the media was Zoran Mamdani’s victory in New York. He is the youngest person to hold the position in more than a century, and the first to hold the position after professing the Islamic faith. He largely imposed himself on a Republican candidate and another former Democratic candidate.

Mamdani is much more left-wing than the average American politician, which doesn’t mean much, but he arrived at City Hall with more than 50% of the vote, carrying his famous social-democratic proposal covered in “.”wokismNo sane person in Europe would call them left-wing extremists, but in certain circles in the United States and abroad they are feared or admired as if they were Manhattan’s version of the Winter Palace attack.

Electoral participation rates, on the other hand, are less than 40%, a figure that could be used to delegitimize the results in less attractive states outside of New York. But in a city where people rarely have more than 30% of registered voters, this victory is also heralded as a paradigm shift that is immeasurably historic for global democracies.

But besides the fact that many people tend to be horrified or excited by proposals that are, in some cases, far more inside the American system than outside it, the truth is that the Democratic candidate’s victory is another bad news for Trump, who campaigned for the Democratic candidate in his usual aggressive and derogatory tone.

An accumulation of setbacks that weigh heavily on you! Because while there still appears to be a lot of work to be done, midterm elections will be held in less than a year, changing the composition of the Senate and Congress and, with it, potentially changing the president’s ability or incompetence to govern the country, depending on how you look at it.

Current opinion polls are also a cause for concern for Trump. His current disapproval rating is about -18%, the worst start to a presidential term in years, worse than Mr. Biden, worse than Mr. Obama and worse than Mr. Trump’s own index in 2017, according to one of the most consulted researchers on political issues in the United States. Only 39% of his countrymen support his government, compared to 58% of his fellow countrymen who disapprove. Moreover, his administration has been rejected in 49 out of 50 states.

As you can see, as many analysts and this program have long pointed out, America’s systemic crisis is irreversible. The collapse did not start with President Trump, but he is pushing it forward, perhaps against his will.

And it seems all Democrats and Republicans can do is fight over who will manage the collapse, rather than try to prevent the predictable collapse.
