A new stage comes next. The first bid launched in July with a budget of 315,729 euros will be invalidated. Because no offer was submitted. The City Council subsequently decided to increase the financial allocation by approximately 50,000 euros and to submit the project to tender after a closed negotiation process. The contract was signed today after partially upholding a request for reconsideration filed by Faos Hydraulica against the agreement to exclude the proposal adopted by the Toledo City Council’s Contracts Committee, leading to a stay of the contract process.
This technical project was signed by architect Raquel Herbaz Herrero, It is located in the southwest part of the site and has a site area of 16,500 square meters.within an area protected as cultural heritage (BIC) in the category of archaeological zone. The aim is to adapt and enhance new areas of the archaeological complex, which are currently underutilized and difficult to access, integrating them into the urban landscape and making them easier to visit.
The intervention will be implemented in three different areas. One corresponds to the area of Visigothic habitat, another corresponds to the road or street area, and the third area corresponds to the Visigothic habitat. Islamic necropolis (Maqbara)the total area is 2,462 square meters. Work will include manual cleaning, installation of anti-vegetation mesh and strengthening of walls totaling 1,234 square meters. The missing sections will be recreated using colored lime concrete.This is a technique already used in the first phase to distinguish between the original and reconstructed regions.
Easy-to-walk archaeological park
This project follows the following criteria: Minimally invasive and reversibleThis allows any element to be removed without affecting the original ruins. The museumization combines neutral materials, different colored gravel, and interpretive podiums to facilitate reading of the complex without invasive reconstruction.
In addition to protecting the remains, The plan includes a new compacted Jabre pedestrian street connecting Mas del Rivero and San Pedro el Verde streets.integrate Vega Baja into urban routes and improve accessibility. Shrub and flower islands will be created with native species, areas of natural grass, embedded low-voltage lighting systems, and street furniture such as benches, trash cans, and beacons.
The entire area is separated by a steel grid to protect the ruins without creating a visual barrier. The result is a landscaped, accessible and functional space. This completes the image of the great archaeological park that Vega Baja will be reborn as.
This intervention is part of a framework agreement signed in 2021 between the Ministry of Culture and Sports, the Regional Commission of Castilla-La Mancha and the City Council of Toledo, starting the first phase to be implemented in 2022. This performance opened the first section of Morelas Trail to the public.today it is fully integrated into the urban life of the city.
Having already decided on the second stage, the City Council is planning a third complementary intervention to complete the museumization of the archaeological complex.
