Trump claims “victory” on government reopening deal – DW – 2025/11/12

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (11/11/2025) credited the Republican Party with a “huge victory” over his Democratic rivals that moved the Senate a step closer to ending the longest government shutdown in the nation’s history.

The Republican-controlled House is scheduled to vote on ending the government shutdown on Wednesday.

In his Veterans Day speech, President Trump boasted that this progress was made because Democratic senators split ranks and voted with Republicans in favor of a budget measure to end the 40-plus-day “shutdown.”

President Trump met Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson at a memorial service for veterans at Arlington National Cemetery and told him, “Congratulations…this is a great victory.”

“We are opening up a country that should never have been shut down,” the president added, using a term often used when public services are closed and reopened due to lack of funding.

President Trump then expressed confidence in the government’s finances through January with his victory in the House of Representatives.

“Only people who hate our country want this country shut down,” he told ESPN.

As a result of the government shutdown, more than 1 million public servants were out of work or working without pay.

This disrupted many services, including air traffic control, and prompted the government to cut air traffic by 10% ahead of Thanksgiving.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy warned reporters at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport that “airlines will be seriously considering whether to continue operating.”

President Trump said Monday that the government will accept reinstatement of thousands of employees permanently laid off during the current “shutdown.”

Democratic leaders have vowed to oppose the open government bill, but it is likely to pass in the House because all it requires is a simple majority, which Republicans hold by a narrow margin.

The agreement divided opinion among Democrats. Many prominent figures say he should have advocated for extending health insurance subsidies for low-income people, a central issue in the budget fight.

“Pathetic,” California Governor Gavin Newsom, widely considered the Democratic favorite in the 2028 presidential election, wrote on X.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing calls for his resignation from some senators for failing to get the Senate on board, despite vocally opposing the bill and voting against it.

For Democrats, the decision by the eight senators was particularly painful, coming days after Trump won elections in New York, New Jersey, Virginia and California that put him at a disadvantage for the first time since returning to the White House.
