A Canadian citizen reported on social media late last month that he had become the victim of a “Goodnight, Cinderella” scam in Rio’s southern district. Cameron Golinski, 35, said in a video that he was drugged and robbed by two men on Oct. 26. According to the victim, there is still evidence of sexual abuse. The suspects are said to have taken $3,000 (approximately R16,000) and a mobile phone.

“I was drugged and forcibly taken to a house by two men. They used drugs to render me unconscious and stole all my money and cell phone. Evidence suggests that I was sexually assaulted. Two days later I woke up naked in my room and felt like I had been hit by a bus,” he said.

“Goodnight, Cinderella” is famous for causing victims to fall unconscious and then have memory blocks, but there are several drugs and drugs that can be used in this scam. The main ones include clonazepam, a powerful sleeping pill, and ketamine, an anesthetic also used in veterinary medicine to dope horses and other large animals.

Clonazepam, better known by its brand name Rivotril, is widely used in low doses to treat anxiety disorders, depression, and psychotic syndromes, among other mental illnesses.

However, if taken in excess, it can cause problems such as low blood pressure, poor cardiopulmonary function, and apnea. In some cases, the patient may fall into a coma.

Ketamine is a powerful painkiller and can cause hallucinogenic effects. This substance is also used as an illegal recreational drug due to its psychedelic effects. Psychedelic drugs dramatically alter certain neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to profound changes in perception, mood, and anxiety.

Experts say they range from anti-anxiety drugs to veterinary grade sedatives. A substance that depresses the central nervous system. It inhibits mental activity and mainly acts on memory centers.

how drugs act on the body

The effects of drugs in the body occur at various stages, and if left untreated, depending on the amount used, it can be fatal.

  • Euphoria and disinhibition: Initially, the victim may feel euphoric and disinhibited, a symptom that can be confused with temporary and quick euphoria and can easily be confused with drunkenness.
  • Confusion and disorientation: The euphoria then turns into mental confusion and disorientation, with slurred speech and difficulty with motor coordination, easily confused with drunkenness.
  • Hypnotic effects: One of the most dangerous effects is a hypnotic state, in which the victim loses his or her judgment and follows commands without question, such as handing over a bank password or going somewhere else with the criminal.
  • Numbness and loss of consciousness: Eventually, the victim enters a state of deep drowsiness and may pass out and become unconscious for a period of 12 to 24 hours or more.

The symptoms are very similar to drunkenness, so criminals usually choose their victims at a bar and mix the drug into the drink itself. Moreover, in alcohol the drug is not perceived or felt. When the victim wakes up, the victim may still feel a bit of amnesia and will not remember the events that occurred while intoxicated.

In high doses, this substance can cause respiratory depression, coma, and even death.

“I remember being a little confused and then everything went black. I didn’t think, I didn’t dream, I just passed out. It was a very traumatic experience,” Golinski said in the video.

The recommended precautions to prevent “Goodnight, Cinderella” are:

  • Don’t leave glasses unattended in public places and always be careful with your drinks.
  • Give preference to tightly packaged drinks, especially at parties. Processed products such as Caipirinha pass through the hands of other people before reaching the consumer.
  • Observe the appearance and taste of the drink. Some substances, when in contact with a liquid, not only cause a change in flavor, but also change the color of the liquid.
