In Tatuape, in the eastern district of São Paulo, 21 residential and commercial buildings were closed by the Civil Defense Authority after an explosion in a building used as an illegal storage site for fireworks.
Civil Defense said the residents of the closed compound were taken into care by their families.
The explosion occurred on Thursday night (13th) at 79 Calle Francisco Bueno.
When the City Protection and Civil Defense Coordination Bureau was notified, extensive damage was discovered. Fragments from the explosion hit several buildings and vehicles several kilometers away.
According to the fire department, one man died. He was to be in charge of the residence where the fireworks took place. Ten others were injured.
According to local residents, the property where the illegal storage was being held had been occupied a month and a half ago.
A member of the Metropolitan Civil Guard who was at the scene said the person in charge of the property identified himself. He and surrounding residents went to the 30th Police Precinct (Tatuape) to make a statement.
The explosion damaged the building, as well as vehicles parked on nearby streets and vehicles passing through Salim Farah Marouf Street.
