A three-year-old girl was killed in a fire that broke out around 5pm on Thursday in the Granada town of Las Gabias (population 23,400), just 15 minutes from the capital. At around 5:15 p.m., emergency services 061 received a call warning of a fire on San Jose de las Gabias Street. The capital’s fire brigade was quickly dispatched and when they arrived at the home they were alerted to a family with minor children living there. According to city officials, the three brothers are 2, 3, and 4 years old. The fire was highly toxic, according to some witnesses, and firefighters entered and rescued those inside. They managed to get the mother and one of the children out. Later, the body of the middle daughter was discovered.
The first hours of the private security investigation focused on determining the cause of the fire and determining which of the five family members, a couple and three children, were in the home at the time. However, 061 initially reported that an adult was trapped on the upper floor of the home along with two minors, one of whom was injured. However, investigators are still trying to determine who occupied the house based on various statements from witnesses.
Sources in the city also said the family was originally from Jaén and had been staying in Las Gabias for several months. There they were fully integrated into the city, with each child attending a different educational center, a kindergarten for the two-year-old and a school for the three- and four-year-olds.
After firefighters, private security, health services and local police arrived at the scene of the incident. Javier Bravo, the town’s first deputy mayor, said the family lived in a single-family home. “The first floor was completely destroyed and the second floor suffered major damage.” The Las Gabias City Council declared a day of mourning and canceled all activities scheduled for this Friday, November 14th.
