Bolaños after attorney general’s trial: ‘It’s time to trust in justice and be patient’ Spain

In a crucial week for the future of state Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, whose sentencing is being considered in his disclosure trial, Minister Félix Bolaños expressed caution and called for “patience.” Asked whether the government would continue to support García Ortiz as much as it has in the past if he is found guilty, he declined to make a decision, saying, “Now is the time to trust in justice, trust in the second chamber (of the Supreme Court), and have a little patience to find out the verdict.”

Arriving at the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee, which deals with, among other things, the reform of the Criminal Procedure Code already passed by the Council of Ministers in October, Mr. Bolaños also spoke to the media about the stability of the parliament after Mr. Juntz came to the rescue of the government by rejecting this Thursday the report of the Attorney-General of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) supporting the PP proposal to abolish the closure date for three nuclear power plants and the law. of pardon.

For the Attorney General, the result of the vote in the parliamentary plenary session the previous day, which also approved two laws of the executive branch thanks to Janz’s support, and which, apart from the violation of these norms, had already been left unattended, is a “characteristic” of the government since 2018, when the PSOE came to power. “We have to have a dialogue, we have to have a discussion, we have to negotiate with all the parliamentary groups, the Junts and other groups.” He added that the government’s aim was “to continue moving forward so that the law improves the living conditions of workers and people,” but declined to answer a question about whether he believed it could become easier in the future, including the EU attorney general’s report.

In this regard, Bolaños recalled that Puigdemont’s reinstatement was “not up to the government” but to the Constitutional Court, which must rule in the coming months, but welcomed the European ruling. “Yesterday was, for all intents and purposes, a very important step in the final verification of the amnesty law. We have always said that this law is constitutional and in accordance with European law (…) We must await the judgment of the CJEU.” The minister accused the PP of its assessment of the Attorney General’s conclusions. “I urge the People’s Party to read before they speak and to think before they speak, so that they can avoid the embarrassment that they had to face yesterday by expressing an opinion that was so far removed from what the Attorney General of the Court of Justice said.”

Bolaños reiterated that the amnesty law was enacted to “guarantee the coexistence” of Catalonia. “The objective of this law has already been achieved and institutional socio-political normalization in Catalonia is a fact,” he said.

Bolaños has already supported the ministry’s actions within the committee, despite facing criticism unleashed by the new Rekrim, which has not yet been dealt with in Congress. “We’re not going to document judicial problems. Reform is always harder and much less subject to criticism than doing nothing.”
