The World Cheese Awards, an international cheese competition, announced the results of its 37th edition on Thursday (13th). The event’s jury evaluated 5,244 products from 46 countries and selected the 18-month aged Swiss Gruyère AOP Vorderfultigen Spezial for the top Super Gold Award. It was praised for its clear texture and richness and umami. The list of medals will show the Brazil label.
“This is a great honor for me and for all the day-to-day work we put into this 24/7. It’s also an honor for all of the almost 20 months that Cheese has spent with us. I’m sure all of our team will be extremely proud and we’re looking forward to seeing what impact this will have on our business. But first, we need to decide how we’re going to celebrate,” said the winning producer.
Second place went to Echardia’s Cremieux des Hardudes aux Fleurs, a French cheese decorated with flowers. Another Swiss recipe graced the podium. Appenzeller Edel-Würzig by Käserei Ifang. The same category also includes cheeses from Japan, Slovakia, America, the Netherlands, and England.
The cheeses entered in the contest were evaluated on a three-point scale based on appearance, aroma, richness, texture, and flavor criteria. In the initial stage, judges worked in groups of two or three to select cheeses worthy of the Bronze, Silver, Gold or Super Gold title.
Only the cheeses classified as Super Gold were then given a new rating, this time with the best 14 labels chosen by a jury of 14 experts. Finally, a debate took place between the 14 finalists to determine who would become the world champion.
The competition also recognized and awarded medals to 24 Brazilian cheeses made using pasteurized milk. See which ones were chosen below.
