Little Jasmine was born this Thursday morning (11/13) with the help of civilian police officers Daniel Presutti and Felipe Viotto of the Armed Group for the Suppression of Robbery and Assault (Gala). The baby’s father was on his way to the hospital, and his mother was already in labor, when the baby stopped his car and called for help from a team patrolling central São Paulo.

Investigators were patrolling the intersection of Calle Sant Joan and Calle Duque de Caxias when a father approached them and frantically alerted the team: “My wife is having a baby.”
Police then returned to contact the family. “At first we thought he needed help getting to the hospital, but as we got closer we realized that the birth had already taken place. My first thought was that we have to bring the baby into the world safely,” Presutti explained. “When we arrived, little Jasmine was already born.”
The action was instinctive, police said. “We stopped, grabbed our gloves and went to help. Everything happened so quickly that we didn’t have time to go to the hospital. The father and I braced ourselves and managed to remove the newborn. Soon after, she started crying to show that she was okay.”
The team used Rayette’s clean cloths and tissues that were in the trunk of the car, as well as surgical gloves that were inside the car. After birth, Jasmine was wrapped in clothes to keep her warm and protected.

Once the mother and child were in stable condition, staff accompanied the family to Santa Casa de Misericordia, where they were received by a medical team. Both are under observation for postpartum care.
This wasn’t the first time police officer Daniel Presutti had helped with a birth. Thirteen years ago, he was with his wife at the birth of their daughter. “It was completely different, but it left me with an indescribable feeling. I have two daughters, one of whom is now 4 years old, so participating in this birth brought back very strong memories and emotions.”
