Finance Minister Fernando Haddad said on Thursday that he does not know whether President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will continue as president if he is elected to a fourth term next year. This statement was made in an interview with the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo.
Asked if he intended to remain in the post for Lula’s fourth term, Haddad said: “I don’t know if that’s the intention, but we’ll see.”
In the interview, Haddad also reaffirmed that he has no intention of running in next year’s elections, despite Lula’s request.
“We haven’t talked about it yet, but he (Lula) knows my tendencies. It’s been around for a long time and it’s not new. It was last year that I told him I had no intention of being a candidate in 2026,” he said.
The Treasury chief also did not guarantee that he would take up his current position in May next year. April is the deadline for ministers to request their removal from office if they wish to stand in the election.
“I don’t know. I haven’t talked to him (Lula) yet. I already said that I delivered everything he ordered. I also delivered everything he ordered,” he said.
