São Paulo announced on Thursday (13th) this week an update on the medical situation of midfielder Oscar (34 years old), who has been hospitalized in São Paulo since Tuesday (11th). According to the bulletin, an investigation conducted at Einstein Hospital in Israel “confirmed the diagnosis of vasovagal syncope.”
The player felt unwell during a preparatory exam for the 2026 season and had an “incident involving a cardiac lesion.” The Morumbi club said he was “clinically well and stable” and “will undergo electrophysiological tests” this Friday (14th).
“Vasovagal syndrome is a medical condition that stands out as the main cause of episodes of syncope, also known as syncope,” said Dr. Alfredo Salim Herito of Sirio Libanes Hospital.
“These syncopes are caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate caused by stimulation of the vagus nerve in the back of the neck,” Herito added.
Oscar also posted a message on social media saying, “God willing, everything will be okay.” Previous tests had already shown the player had heart changes and he is now considering quitting football.
His contract with Sao Paulo is scheduled to end in December 2027. The club’s director of football, Carlos Belmonte, said he would respect a player’s wishes if they wish to bring forward their retirement.
