The Minister Alexandre de Moraesof the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized series of visit to former president Jair Bolsonaroin house arrest In Brasilia since August. Thirteen people were approved, including Governor Tarcisio de Freitas of São Paulo State, Governor Claudio Castro of Rio State, and Vice Governor Guilherme Delaito (PP-SP).
Tarcisio and Castro’s visit was requested by the former president’s defense team, which stressed in a letter to the STF that it should take place “as soon as possible due to the need for direct dialogue” with the governors. Mr. Moraes had scheduled Mr. Castro’s resignation from office on November 26. Tarsisio’s date was December 10th. The governor of São Paulo has already visited the former president on another occasion. Tarcisio is a close ally of Bolsonaro and is likely to run for president in 2026. Bolsonaro has not yet announced who he will support, and Tarcisio has said publicly that he will seek re-election to the state government.
Castro and Delight’s visit comes amid the fallout from a major police operation in Rio that has left 121 people dead and reignited debate over a bill aimed at combating organized crime. The PP deputy is São Paulo’s official public security secretary and currently the opposition PL rapporteur, but the vote was postponed until next week following criticism from both the federal government and the opposition.
Mr. Moraes scheduled Mr. Delight’s visit for December 1st. Goiás Governor Ronaldo Caiado was also given permission to meet with the former president. Kaiad, who plans to run for president in 2026, is also advocating in Congress for approval of projects that strengthen criminal justice and champion the association of criminal factions with terrorism.
In his order, President Moraes stipulates that visiting hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Bolsonaro was ordered to be placed under house arrest as part of an investigation into the actions of Bolsonaro’s son, Vice President Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), in order to force the process. The former president was sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup, but the case has not yet been finalized and no sentencing has yet been determined.
