A storm warning has been issued for south-central Brazil due to instability caused by the heat, with the possibility of rain this Friday, mainly in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo and Paraná. The region is expected to experience strong winds (up to 100km/h) and rainfall of up to 100mm per day, according to the National Meteorological Institute (Inmet).

These conditions are the result of moisture transport from the Amazon that maintains a low-pressure center between Brazil and Paraguay, resulting in instability in the region.

“In this region, which involves the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, west of Santa Catarina and southwestern of Paraná, there has been a significant amount of rain. Nevertheless, (temperatures) will rise. And this humid heat will foster thunderstorms and showers with gusts, not comparable to those recorded last week,” warns meteorologist Andrea Ramos.

In addition, high temperatures will be accompanied by high humidity as it moves from Santa Catarina Island through Paraná state to the coasts of São Paulo and Rio, with the possibility of rain showers in these areas, especially in the afternoon.

The phenomenon is expected to continue for at least the next 10 days, with rainfall reaching up to 100 mm in some states across the country, according to the MetSul portal. The band of moisture spread across the continent also brings rain to Amazonas, Acre, Rondonia and Roraima.

For the Northeast, Inmet has issued a low humidity warning partially covering all provinces in the region (with the exception of Sergipe). According to the institute, it is expected that the relative humidity of the air could reach 20% in these locations. The institute advised caution for the coast stretching from Natal to San Luis, due to the potential risk of so-called coastal winds that could shift sand dunes.

A warning of potential danger from the storm was also issued for the northern region of Rio Grande do Sul, through Center West, São Paulo and Mineiro Triangulo. Temperatures vary in these regions, with maximum temperatures of 30 °C in Belo Horizonte and Rio, while in Porto Alegre it is only 28 °C, in Florianopolis 24 °C and in Curitiba only 20 °C.

The recommendations of the National Meteorological Institute (IMMET) are to avoid facing severe weather, monitor changes in slopes and, if possible, turn off electrical appliances and general energy supplies. The institute has also left a series of instructions for residents in areas most likely to be affected by the rains. Look:

  1. Turn off electrical appliances and general power.
  2. Observe the change in slope.
  3. If there is a gust of wind, please do not seek shelter under a tree as there is a slight risk of falling or electrical discharge. Also, do not park your vehicle near power towers or advertising signs.
  4. In case of flooding, protect your belongings from water by wrapping them in plastic bags.
  5. For more information, contact the Civil Defense Department (phone 199) and the Fire Department (phone 193).
