This Friday, Maritime Rescue rescued more than 350 migrants in two cayucos south of El Hierro, including at least one infant and 44 women, according to a tally carried out on the first of two ships, bringing the total to 247 already in the port of La Restinga.
Around noon, a rescue plane searching the Atlantic Ocean south of the Canary Islands for possible boats carrying migrants spotted the first cayuco, about 100 kilometers from El Hierro.
This led to the dispatch of the Navia, the most modern and fastest of the two salvage vessels assigned to the port of La Restinga, to the rescue, a spokesperson for the state company detailed to EFE.
However, the crew discovered that they were en route to the rescue in another canoe that had run out of fuel and had more people on deck than could be safely boarded (203 men and 44 women).
Considering this situation, he also mobilized from La Restinga to Salvamar Difuda. Between the two tides, all the rescued people were transferred to land. The first group consisted of 40 physically weak people on the Navy, and the remaining 207 on the Dihuda.
There is no data yet on how many minors were on board, but EFE was able to confirm that upon disembarkation, at least one infant was among the group of 40 people, who was taken to Valverde Hospital along with a woman who suffered facial contusions.
In parallel, Guardamar Talia was mobilized from Santa Cruz de Tenerife in case it was necessary to help the most remote Cayucos. After the initial rescue, he returned to the sea and was finally rescued by the Salvamar Navya.
An initial estimate of 110 to 130 residents is expected to arrive at La Restinga around 7:30 p.m.
