Technology is changing the role of lawyers in this country

Brazilian lawyers and courts have increased their use of artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years to automate repetitive tasks, review legal documents and predict court outcomes. According to the records of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), this progress has become essential given the increase in litigation and the digitalization of the working environment, a phenomenon that has intensified since the introduction of electronic processes nationwide.

Accelerating advances in AI for lawyers will redefine traditional practices, optimize industry tasks, and improve efficiency standards. Recent research highlights that legal AI solutions automate processes and analyze large amounts of data, making a particularly noticeable impact on firms seeking a competitive edge and precision in their work, and that free AI options for lawyers democratize access to technology.

According to an article published in the Ibero-American Journal of Humanities, Sciences and Education in November 2024, the efficiencies brought about by legal AI are noticeable in document automation, contract review, and procedural review. The tools developed for the Brazilian market demonstrate the country’s role in implementing AI systems for lawyers, promoting transparent communication, and speeding up judicial decisions.

The application of artificial intelligence in Brazilian law firms is beginning to show concrete results. A real-world example is the use of an AI system in our office in Recife. Automating repetitive processes such as data entry increased accuracy rates from 75% to 95%.

This improvement represents not only a significant reduction in the time required to perform these tasks, but also a reduction in the scope for error, which is fundamental in legal activities where every detail can affect the outcome. While the technology represents an important advance, experts emphasize the need for human oversight to ensure the quality and accountability of AI-assisted decision-making, avoid errors caused by algorithms, and maintain fairness in legal operations.

Time optimization is one of the most commonly cited benefits of implementing legal AI. “One of the main benefits of artificial intelligence in the legal field is increased efficiency. Routine and repetitive tasks such as contract reviews, legal research, document screening, and other services for law firms can be automated,” comments legal technology expert Cássio Bastos R.. Free legal AI frees up lawyers’ time to focus on more complex and strategic issues.

Despite the benefits, this study highlights ethical challenges and the need for continuous human monitoring. Legal liability for lawyers’ decisions assisted by artificial intelligence and the risk of algorithmic bias that can undermine procedural fairness are relevant caveats. According to the article, while human oversight reduces algorithmic errors, the ultimate responsibility for legal applications of AI will always remain with lawyers, complementing the analysis of scientific papers.

Regulation of artificial intelligence for lawyers and other legal tools includes initial parameters in standards such as the General Data Protection Act (LGPD) and bills being debated in parliament. Following the hearing in the Federal Senate, the approved Bill 2,338/2023 is now being sent to the House of Representatives for analysis and final vote.

The project aims to establish rules for the use of AI systems in the country, with legal scholars and parliamentarians discussing the creation of a specific liability regime for disputes involving AI systems, and reinforcing the importance of transparency and informed consent in the management of sensitive data.

According to the study authors, the balance between technology and ethics will strengthen trust in AI for lawyers and expand its adoption without compromising the important role of human judgment. Professionals who continually qualify and follow technology trends will further enhance their ability to thrive and contribute to a more agile, competitive, and fair legal system.
