The American entertainment magazine “The Hollywood Reporter” has named Brazilian Wagner Moura as a candidate for the Best Actor Oscar for his role in the movie “The Secret Agent.” The magazine prioritizes the actor over names like Timothée Chalamet (star of the feature film “Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Michael B. Jordan (“Sinners”) and George Clooney (“Jay Kelly”).
The ranking, which “selects” all award favorites, was created by Scott Feinberg, the magazine’s awards coverage editor, who said Brazilian films have other awards opportunities. According to experts, “The Secret Agent” also ranks fourth in the international film award race and seventh in the original screenplay award race.
The film also ranks 13th on the list of nominees for Best Director (Brazilian Kleber Mendonça Filho), 17th for Best Picture, and 23rd for Best Picture.

After winning an award at the Cannes Film Festival and being selected to represent Brazil in the 2026 Oscar competition, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s film The Secret Agent premiered on screens earlier this month. The film, starring Wagner Moura, is set in 1977 during the military dictatorship. Brazil during this period was characterized by ideological tensions, instability, intrigue, and the disturbing secrets of a military dictatorship.
Set in the 1970s, The Secret Agent stars Wagner Moura as Marcelo, a technology expert who, after years away, returns to Recife in search of a little peace, only to discover that his hometown harbors danger and disturbing secrets.
In addition to Wagner, other notable talents make up the cast, including Maria Fernanda Candido, Gabriel Leone, Carlos Francisco, Robério Diogenes, Elmira Guedes, Tania Maria, Isabel Zuaa, and Alice Carvalho.
