Martin Goering The head of the PRO bloc in the Senate assured that the yellow party has “a role to accompany the government elected by society to ensure that Argentina does well,” but stressed that without the support of that space, the ruling party “would not even have a base law.” in fonte vecchia modeby internet tv and radio profile (AM 1190), the former president said: Mauricio Macri He acknowledged that he was “showing full support” to the government, but “It’s not being evaluated as it should be.”.

Martín Goerling holds a degree in International Relations and Political Science and a Master’s degree in Public Administration and Business Management. He served as an advisor to the Yasireta bilateral organization from 2016 to 2020, and then as its secretary general. He currently serves as a national senator for the state of Misiones. In addition, he is chairman of the PRO bloc in the Senate and chairman of the Permanent Bicameral Committee that oversees internal security institutions and activities.

Mauricio Macri: “I’m tired of hearing that Argentina could become like Australia or Canada”

Authoritarians don’t like this

The practice of professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe that they are the owners of the truth.

What do you think about PRO? Does Mauricio Macri’s party have a future?

Yes, of course there is a future. The PRO is a national political party present in all provinces of Argentina, with governors, mayors, legislators, and leaders with extensive experience and ability. So, of course, this party has a future.

And where will it go? Where does politics stand today? Some leaders moved to La Libertad Avanza. Diego Santilli himself was just sworn in as Interior Minister yesterday. How can I reconfigure PRO in the future?

Politics in Argentina, and not only in Argentina but in the whole world, are undergoing many changes. The political situation from 2023 to today shows that society is elected. Javier Millay To carry out change and transformation in Argentina. We’ve been working on it since day one. That is the position we have been and will continue to be without losing our PRO identity. We exist all over the country, we have identities, we have parties, we have people.

Today, we have the role of accompanying the government elected by society to ensure that Argentina does well. You won’t see us putting a spanner in the works from any perspective. Yes, there are certain differences, as has been the case in recent Congresses, with some representatives and senators not wanting to go along with some bills, but supporters of the most important bills going along. I believe that a large part of the success of this government’s governance was that it found an opposition like the PRO, supported it, and did not pump the brakes. This is a blessing that we have in this government that we didn’t have when we were in government.

Was it luck or was there accompaniment? What does it refer to?

No, that’s what I say If PRO had taken the opposite position and blocked absolutely everything, the government wouldn’t even have a base law.or nothing at all. And I believe that PRO’s stance is fundamental: to build, strengthen and support the changes that society chooses to make.

Argentine society cannot prevent another failure. We are all waiting for Argentina to decisively get back on track, move forward, have a strong economy and start producing the necessary changes. It seems to me the least interesting thing for politics to bet on the failure of this government. Because politics is not about solving Argentina, but about the search for cosmic power. That is the PRO attitude and we will be there to support anything Argentina needs to do well.

A hallmark of the PRO almost from its inception was a respect for institutions and republicanism, which Millais mocked by talking about “Republican nerds.” Isn’t there a lot of noise on your side about what is happening or what will happen to Millay?

That noise in government in the last period before the election, in the last months of 2023, was also due to a failure to respect the issues that you rightly pointed out. I think the government is paying attention to that point. In short, Argentina’s democratic political system is working and it is the system that needs to be strengthened. People and politicians alike, we are here today, not tomorrow. We act according to the situation, so we have to be at our best when we need to be there. Now, when those in power and governments focus on blowing up or weakening an organization, that is the greatest damage that can occur.

And there the PRO is clear. Protecting the system and the republic is PRO’s DNA. This is because countries with weak institutions have no possibility of development. It’s proven. Therefore, we must strengthen our institutions and give them the capacity to govern. I think the balance between what happens in the Senate, the House of Representatives, and the executive branch is important.

That is the path the government is currently taking: agreements and meetings. As I have always said and experienced in the Senate, it is impossible to pass legislation without seeking agreement, dialogue and consensus, and I believe this will continue to be the dynamic. Because, although the government’s choices were very good, it does not have a majority in either the House of Commons or the Senate. The number of senators is not 20, but a minimum of 37 to ensure a quorum of its own to meet. Therefore, it is necessary to talk and look for encounters.I think that’s the path to take.

Mauricio Macri heads a meeting of the Professional National Council to discuss its relationship with La Libertad Avanza

Part of the PRO block has decided to participate in La Libertad Avanza. How do you accept this?

Those are personal decisions. I don’t think it’s easy to quit a game that won you a seat or gave you an opportunity. It’s a very personal decision. I obviously won’t share it. I think I have to represent the place I was chosen to represent. However, there are many officials from our party who are currently in the executive department, so those are personal wishes. Without further ado, the brand new Minister of the Interior (Diego) Santilliis the leader of the PRO who topped the list in the last election due to an agreement with the party. This is part of our current support. Switching to a bank is a very personal decision. I believe that we can continue to protect the government from where it belongs, in my case from the PROs, and that is the path I am trying to take. After that it’s a completely personal decision.

Mauricio Macri was not invited to Santilli’s swearing-in ceremony. He was invited to Olivos and while there he learned of Guillermo Francos’ departure. Was there some minor abuse by the former president?

It can be due to a certain attitude or form. It’s difficult to give an opinion in that sense. Because we don’t know the intimacy of those meetings, the president’s meetings with Macri, whether there were any unfulfilled promises. I don’t know, so I’d like to refrain from giving my personal opinion. Now, what I can say from a political point of view is that President Macri has given his full support and during the most difficult times that this government faced, including the very strong run that the United States later intervened on, President Macri went to Olivos and said publicly that we have to support the government. Mr. Macri always had a positive attitude, and I think he was a great former president. Macri’s support for the government is not being appreciated as much as it should be.But I don’t know what the private conversation was and the reason for the message.

A legislative agenda is coming up. How do you know what’s going to happen? Budget and labor reforms appear to be priorities. Do you think there is a budget and labor reform will be implemented?

I think so. Argentina can no longer endure a third year without a budget. Everyone strives to reach a successful conclusion, and we believe that we will achieve it. Negotiations with the governor, deputy, and senators will also be necessary. Many of us represent local areas, so there will be discussions to approve this budget, but we all recognize that we need a budget.

And then there’s the next one. Labor, taxation, and criminal reformthree projects that I haven’t sent yet but have already announced I will send. I don’t know what those projects are, but from what I’ve talked to with most senators; Everyone agrees that these reforms are necessary. These are structural reforms that Argentina needs to discuss, and of course I think they will gain support through discussion and negotiation.

That’s why things don’t go 100% as the executive team wants. Because we all want to express our opinions and contribute to some kind of change. But discussion is healthy and necessary. Argentina urgently needs to modernize its labor laws. We have laws from the 70s and today we are discussing the impact of artificial intelligence in the workplace. It is clear that with these laws we do not intend to create more job gaps or exclude millions of Argentines from informal employment. We would like to see such discussions across all blocs, and it is healthy that they should. We hope that we can reach reforms soon so that Argentina’s labor market becomes more dynamic.

Are they left without a vacation? Will there be a lot of work?

i hope so. It hasn’t happened yet, but what is clear is that first the budget will be an anomaly, then other legislation will be an anomaly. For me, the urgency of these reforms is important. I believe that tax and labor reform are inseparable and are discussions that cannot be postponed if we want to revitalize the economy and start generating jobs, investment, and consumption. The sooner the better.
