Rio de Janeiro’s Public Ministry (MPRJ) this Wednesday (12/11) sent a report to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) pointing out the presence of “atypical injuries” on two of the 121 bodies killed in the large-scale police operation that began on October 28 in the Peña and Alemán complexes in northern Rio de Janeiro.

This document was produced by the Department of Digital Evidence Technology (DEDIT), which oversees trials at the Institute of Forensic Medicine (IML). The text points out that two distinct “atypical injuries” were observed. The first was a body with injuries that appeared to have been caused by a gunshot wound at close range.
The second atypical injury noted by lawmakers was another body with “decapitation wounds caused by sharp or blunt objects, in addition to wounds caused by firearm projectiles from a distance.”

Lawmakers stress that all 121 of the dead were men. “They were all hit by firearm projectiles typical of those with high kinetic energy (rifles) and sustained external and internal injuries characteristic of this type of action,” the MP said.
The document also shows that the average age of the 121 people who died was between 20 and 30 years old.
“The presence of multiple projectile entry and exit injuries was observed, primarily located in the chest, abdomen, and back areas, consistent with an armed conflict.”
The report also states that many of those killed were wearing camouflage clothing and operational boots, vests with magazine holders, and tactical sniper gloves.
“During the search, ammunition, pressed grass and mobile phone equipment were found in some clothing pockets (…) Most of the bodies had multiple tattoos, some of which are known to be associated with the eradication of criminal forces and police officers.”
