São Paulo state governor Tarcisio de Freitas (Republican) said Cracolandia in the center of the capital was over. This Thursday (11/13), he published a video on social media celebrating six months since the demobilization of the area’s open drug use scene.
“What is happening in the heart of São Paulo is the result of a comprehensive public policy that is set as a real priority, not a quibble. Working together with courage and purpose, safety, health and hospitality are giving back the heart of the city to its people,” the governor wrote.

Among his highlights, he cited operations in Favela do Moinho, considered the core of organized crime and drug sales in the region.

“Today, in places where large crowds gather, we are arriving with the support of the state. When we say Cracolandia is over, we are talking about that scenario we envisioned, with large-scale drug sales, free zones and use sites. That is no longer the case. Will there still be drug addicts on the streets? Yes, this has always happened and will continue to happen in any large center. And wherever it is, we will provide care.”
Tarcisio also promised to revitalize the region, including relocating the government’s administrative center from São Paulo to the region, as well as construction projects to accommodate artificial intelligence startups. For this second initiative, he said bids should be floated within two weeks and the project should be completed near 2030.
