Pogust Goodhead, a British company that represented 25 municipalities in a British lawsuit seeking to restrict the activities of Ibram (Brazilian Mining Institute), must reimburse Ibram £811,000 (approximately R$5.7 million) for abandoning the case in British courts.
This decision was announced at a public hearing this Thursday (13th). The amount relates to Mr Ibram’s legal costs in the English courts.
Pogast Goodhead announced his intention to waive any claims against the institute and withdraw from the process. The judge subsequently ruled that the law firm should be compensated for its inappropriate behavior throughout the London proceedings. The final decision after this deliberation is expected to be announced within the next few days.
Ibram CEO Raul Jungmann said the decision strengthens the company’s commitment to defending national sovereignty, administrative ethics and Brazilian institutions.
“It is essential that Brazil protects its sovereignty over its mineral resources,” he says.
“Mr. Ibram’s actions have always sought to ensure that public policy and judicial decisions respect this right and guarantee legal security and predictability in this sector, without compromising investments and the competitiveness of Brazilian mining,” he continued. “Submitting this country to foreign jurisdiction, as it was during colonial Brazil, would be an unprecedented invasion of our sovereignty.”
