France, finalists in the last two editions and one of the favorites to win next year, has secured a spot in the 2026 World Cup. The French team, led by No. 10 and team captain Mbappé, defeated Ukraine 4-0 to secure their place in the World Cup. The Real Madrid striker scored twice, with Olise and Ekitike also scoring.
Meanwhile, Norway and Portugal were unable to confirm their places in the penultimate round of European qualification. The Norwegians also did their homework by defeating Estonia 4-1, but the party was spoiled by Italy, who scored two goals while the lights were out and defeated Moldova 2-0. The two teams will meet at San Siro in the next round, with goal difference ensuring the Scandinavian side qualify for their first World Cup in 27 years.
Portugal, on the other hand, did not have a happy night. The team lost 2-0 to Ireland in a game in which Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off for taking an elbow in the box. Still, Portugal can qualify for the 2026 World Cup with just a few more wins. Meanwhile, the Irish can qualify for the play-offs if they beat Hungary in Budapest.
