The US government has included four European radical leftist groups on its list of global terrorist organizations, denouncing them as entities.antifa (Anti-fascists) are violent. ” As part of this list, the four groups are placed in the same category as violent Islamic extremist organizations such as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (IS).
The groups include German Antifa Ost, which the State Department describes as a “Germany-based militia” that carried out attacks against suspected “fascists” in that country from 2018 to 2023 and in Romania in 2023. It also includes the International Revolutionary Front, an unofficial anarchist federation that the U.S. government says operates primarily in Italy, and two Greek groups, Armed Proletarian Justice and Class Self-Defense Revolutionaries.
According to the State Department, Proletarian Justice claimed responsibility for planting a bomb near the riot police headquarters in Gudi in 2023. The Revolutionary Class Self-Defense Forces claimed responsibility for the April explosion at the Torrenes Helenos railway company, which caused no injuries and only minor property damage. The group also claimed responsibility for an attack on the Athens Ministry of Employment in 2024, which also resulted in no casualties.
The designation, which will take effect on November 20, comes in parallel to a campaign launched by US President Donald Trump against anti-fascist protests in the country following the killing of young conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September, and in the wake of protests in several cities against his harsh policies of mass deportation.
Republicans subsequently designated Antifa as a terrorist organization. This is despite the fact that experts almost unanimously believe that these groups in the United States are uncoordinated, lack structure and organization, and that their protests fall short of terrorism.
According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the government will continue to add other Antifa groups to the list of foreign terrorist organizations.
“Groups participating in this movement espouse revolutionary anarchist or Marxist ideologies, including anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian ideas, which they use to incite and justify violent attacks within their own territory and abroad,” the US foreign affairs chief said.
“The United States will continue to use all available tools to protect national security and public safety and prevent terrorists from accessing funds and resources,” the official said.
