São Paulo player Oscar was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope this Thursday (11/13). The midfielder has been hospitalized at Israel Albert Einstein Hospital since Tuesday (11/11) and was rushed to the hospital after a routine CT scan showed changes in his heart. A diagnosis requires treatment but does not preclude the possibility of retirement.

Oscar from Sao Paulo speaks out after being rushed to hospital
Dr. Georgia Guedes da Silva explained that vasovagal syncope is associated with sports and sun exposure. This case is related to pressure loss.
“Vasovagal syncope, also known as neurally mediated syncope or general syncope, is a diagnosis of exclusion. In other words, tests do not directly confirm this type of syncope, but help rule out other causes. Among them are tests such as echocardiography, 24-hour Holter monitoring, and finally cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. These tests are usually performed during the patient or athlete’s hospitalization,” Georgia emphasized.
“After ruling out structural diseases and malignant arrhythmias, we can conclude that the syncope is vasovagal syncope. There is also a special test called the slope test that attempts to reproduce the episode to confirm the diagnosis,” he explained.
The cardiologist elaborated that the cause of the diagnosis includes symptoms similar to a drop in pressure.
“Fainting, or episodes of loss of consciousness, can have a variety of causes, from simple to more serious conditions. Common syncope, such as those caused by prolonged exposure to the sun or the sight of blood, is called vasovagal syncope. This type occurs with a simple mechanism, caused by overstimulation of nerve fibers in the heart that causes a drop in blood pressure or heart rate,” he added.
retirement
Since the player’s hospitalization, rumors of his retirement began to surface, causing anxiety among fans. Nevertheless, experts reported that the diagnosis should not have a serious impact on the number eight’s health, but stressed that treatment is necessary.
“This type of event does not pose any significant consequences or limitations for the athlete. Therefore, if serious cardiac disease is excluded and a vasovagal cause is confirmed, a return to physical activity is allowed,” the cardiologist noted.
“In short, it is very unlikely that an athlete will have to withdraw permanently due to vasovagal syncope, but it is extremely rare for an athlete to experience recurrent episodes so frequently,” he added.
process
Oscar remains hospitalized at Israel Albert Einstein Hospital. Sao Paulo reported that the midfielder is scheduled to undergo electrophysiological tests in the coming days. The doctor explained what treatments are recommended for diagnosing vasovagal syncope.
“Treatment basically consists of maintaining good hydration and eliminating the triggering factors. If the factor is pain, it must be treated; if it is dehydration, it is important to avoid it; and if the factor is stress, it must be minimized as much as possible,” Dr. Georgia explained.
“In short, treatment is based on identifying and eliminating the cause of the episode, and hydration is a fundamental point. Patients should always keep themselves well hydrated, as this is directly related to the prevention of crises,” he concluded.
The club has advised that it will only release new information and medical updates with Oscar’s permission. Please note that details regarding hospitalization will only be made public through the medical certificate from the hospital.
