Marina Lima comments on every song on her setlist, from Billie Eilish’s ‘Lunch’ to her partnership with brother Antonio Cicero on ‘Vilgem’

My brother and partner Antonio Cicero are missing.

The overwhelming majority of Marina’s songs have something in common. It is a partnership with her brother, the poet and philosopher Antonio Cicero (1945-2024). According to Marina, they composed about 200 songs together. ABL member Cicero, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, was euthanized in Switzerland last October and died at the age of 79.

–Cicero was great. It permeated my entire life and work and resulted in 23 albums. He left suddenly, but his presence is everywhere – says the artist. — After Cicero left, we played a video in his memory on the big screen, and each time I saw it, I was filled with emotion and nostalgia. I think about him almost the entire show. I feel like I’m singing to him.

For Marina, who turned 70 in September, time is on her side. The artist, who had already suffered damage to his vocal cords (and subsequently suffered a brief bout of depression), has recovered and says he now feels “powerful”. From the stage, she sings along with her muse and a willing audience following her many hits.

— I have lived through all eras, but I have never stuck to any one. Now I am open to understanding and accepting what 70 brings to me. I have been taking care of my body since childhood and now I am happy with my health. My voice is back – says Marina, who says she’s been doing gymnastics and vocal exercises. — I didn’t sing for a while, so I had to put on the brakes a little bit. Now in my 70s, I feel like I’m on a rocket heading towards the light. Ready to go to your next destination.

— When I started my career, the Brazilian music scene was completely dominated by men. At the time, coming out as a woman, singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, and bisexual was extremely difficult, especially as I had always been. However, I have always felt that I can be myself without worrying about what others think of me, and that is reflected in my music as a result. To this day, my work reaches young people and I am inspired by whatever I want because I have always taken on everything in life.

Delighted by the “flowing freedom” of the new generation (keyboardist/bassist Carol Mathias and dancer Carol Rangel are included in the group), Marina says she likes working with “timeless” subjects.

— The issues I talk about in my lyrics are timeless. They come from within and end up touching the other person. My job is to talk about emotions.
