This Wednesday there was an article with this title: If the squatter fails to conduct a hearing “You’ll have a bigger audience talking about squatters instead of rising house prices.”

“And according to the Home Office, trespass or usurpation complaints will account for just 0.06% of the total housing stock in 2024.”

That’s a common mantra. In February this year, SER said:Javier Ruiz It explains why Spaniards believe the problem of illegal occupation is almost 1,000 times bigger than it really is.

”Squatters are down from two years ago, affecting 0.057% of homes. We express it differently: this phenomenon affects 5.7 people per 10,000 inhabitants,” the SER added.

(The prevalence of torts per 10,000 inhabitants is 5.7, making torts one of the most common crimes in Spain. The prevalence of crimes against sexual freedom is 4.55. Sexual assault with sexual assault, 1. 02. Murder, 0.07. Drug trafficking, 4.49. Automobile theft, 3.25. In other words, it is not the people who minimize illegal occupation.

on wednesday, Antonio Naranjo played in your program analysis (Telemadrid), part of what someone said Valeria Lacua spokesperson for the tenants union called for illegal occupation of other people’s apartments.

“There’s nothing wrong with being a squatter. Squatting is giving life to abandoned and necessary things. Unjust laws must be obeyed. There’s a campaign to criminalize brutal squatting. I don’t want to pay what you say I have to pay, because I know it’s worthless and just speculation. Of course I’m going to break those rules.”

Knife brawls, bottle fights, drug deals, robberies…this is the daily life suffered by the residents of Alcorcón ever since a group of squatters took up residence in the old commercial complex of the Old Madrid Museum.

So squatting is a non-existent problem, officially affecting “only” 5.7 people out of 10,000, and the far right magnifying the problem to scare retirees (or sell more newspapers).

The problem is that it’s a lie. Hoax

Squats are a monster that increases the official numbers by 3-4 times, and this is one of four reasons why. With immigration, suffocating regulations, and extortion taxation. As a result, Spain’s real estate market is in ruins.

And that’s objective analysis.

For, if we go beyond this objective analysis, the question arises as to why the government and various Spanish institutions continue to insist on the protection of squatters, even if they do not encourage illegal occupation of private property due to their passive attitude in the face of flagrant crimes.

Because if someone (let me guess) tried to destroy the real estate market and destroy the middle and working classes in order to guarantee a captive market of votes dependent on state paternalism; One of the most direct ways to accomplish this is to effectively destroy property rights..

In other words, the real “de-sokpa” are the squatters who will kick you out of your home for the benefit of the government.

These are 16 facts that the government and its affiliated journalists hide from Spaniards in order to minimize the true scale of the illegal occupation problem.

They had been illegally occupying the health center for more than a year and were planning a party there, but had to cancel due to neighborhood pressure, forcing the squatters to go to the doctor “due to stress and anxiety” and blaming the mayor.

And RTVE normalizes it.

1. The government states that the number of complaints in 2024 will be 16,426. However, estimates by real estate market experts point out that the actual number of incidents is between 50,000 and 60,000 per year..

In reality, the Interior Ministry limits itself to compiling formal charges of usurpation and trespassing, ignoring “underwater trespasses” that go unreported due to resistance from victims.

2. Platforms such as Safe Rental assert that up to 57% of those affected cannot even reach a police station for fear of eternal judicial proceedings and violent retaliation in the form of the destruction of squatters or their homes.

3. Squatting is a neglected tort in which a delinquent tenant who initially enters a home with a legal contract becomes a de facto squatter when he feels he wants to stop paying rent.

This variant, in which non-payment escalates to illegal occupation, does not fit into the government’s formal categories and is therefore not registered in official accounts.

However, this represents thousands of incidents that primarily deplete small landowners..

4. Illegal occupations currently exceed 100,000 homes in Spain, taking into account the accumulated stock and silent cases.

This African figure includes not only “official” complaints but also the legacy of past wrongdoings that remain unresolved. Meanwhile, the government is hiding the fact that only 0.06% of real estate stocks are “officially” affected..

5. Real estate platforms have already adapted to Spain’s new reality and offer their customers the possibility of choosing squatter housing as if it were just another feature of housing.

In some cases, users have to repeatedly flip through the platform’s pages Until I found a house that wasn’t illegally occupied..

6. Victims lose an average of €40,000 for each illegal occupation, including unpaid rent, renovation costs and legal costs.

This is because the owner not only loses control of his property, but also suffers from a financial hemorrhage in a process that takes forever.

Meanwhile, the government, which is primarily responsible for encouraging property crimes, not only fails to compensate owners, but also treats owners’ losses as if they were mere administrative inconveniences.

7. 80% of those affected by illegal occupation in Spain are not banks or investment funds, as the left says. However, small owners who have one house on the market.

Contrary to government narratives that portray squatting as a problem caused by “speculation” by banks and investment funds, the majority of these crimes affect poor families who see their life savings evaporate.

8. Illegal occupation has become a form of violent expropriation in Spain, and the government has left it in the hands of the squatters, even as it refrains from blaming abstract entities (“speculators”) for the failure of socialist housing policies, which only exacerbated the problem.

Home sales by squatters are booming in Asturias
“Many people are being forced to sell their properties, sometimes at prices close to 50% of their actual value,” warned Francisco Iranheta, a spokesman for Idealista. https://t.co/XJyGfqbq0K

9. Catalonia tops the ranking of torts with 42.6% of official complaints (7,009 in 2024), although the actual estimate is much higher than 10,000.

Barcelona and Gerona are hotspots. According to Idealista data, hundreds of illegally occupied properties are up for sale, but local authorities are keeping the number to a minimum.

10. The communities of Andalusia and Valencia account for 20% and 15% of complaints, but the actual figure is three times higher than the official figure, with more than 23,000 squatted houses on the market nationwide.

Seville and Alicante stand out in Idealist’s list. 3% of total supply will be affected.

11. Hidden crouching can reach 70% of the total Driven by fear, distrust of justice, and victim fatigue.

12. Reports that the government is ignoring to keep numbers low show that in 2025, 57% of people consulted on private platforms will choose not to report, up from 18.8% in 2023.

The government’s strategy is clear. If we discourage complainants by leaving them to their fate, they will eventually stop reporting and the number of “official” squats will decline.

13. Eviction trials have lasted more than a year, leaving thousands of victims disappointed. According to the CGPJ, although the Anti-Squatting Law of 2025 explicitly promises evictions, the judicial reality is a slow labyrinth, and only a small percentage of cases end in the eviction of criminals.

Although the government portrays the process as “safe,” it is only for the squatters, who get free time (and money) at the owners’ expense.

14. Hidden squatting continues to increase, but ‘official’ complaints have increased by 34.5% since 2018. Not the “gentle rebound” some journalists tout.

Agencies such as the IEE have confirmed this cumulative increase, but officials have downgraded it to “under pre-pandemic control” and ignored a peak of around 16,500 complaints in 2024.

15. Because the public system has failed the people, private solutions, the eviction companies that the left touts as fascist dens, are mushrooming.

Platforms like PAO and Segro Rental handle thousands of queries a year where affected people avoid reporting. Let private organizations do the work that the government refuses to do.

16. The deadline to evict squatters has increased from an average of 12 months in 2017 to 21 months in 2025.

In France, it takes almost two years to solve serious crimes that are solved within 48 hours. In Germany, within 24 hours. In the Netherlands soon. And in England, Threatened with imprisonment if the house was not vacated within 24 hours.
