anti-faction project
“Delight changed the text and said that the PF could investigate factions in partnership or with permission from the state” (Cotidiano, 11/11). In fact, according to the federal constitutional model, states’ authority in this matter is guaranteed, regardless of an increase in crime. Subordination to federal agencies violates constitutional principles.
Paulo Giusto (Cabo Frio, RJ)
Conditioning federal police actions on state governments would be a way to weaken the fight against organized crime.
Leticia Aparecida Passos (San Carlos, SP)
This nation has neither the ability nor the knowledge to write such an important piece of writing. The PF has sovereignty over all investigations, regardless of government approval. This project is a bad joke.

organized crime
“Voters view the operation in Faria Lima more favorably than in the favelas” (Juliano Spyer, 8/11). This positive result is all the more surprising given the recent support for murder in Rio. The police operation against the PCC in Faria Lima broke a taboo and suggested that elites are not exempt from fighting crime, and that piling up bodies only in slums is not only not a solution, but a legacy of racism and class prejudice, of the country’s historical wounds.

COP Bethlehem
“The Atlantic crossing draws crowds to the forgotten beaches of Belém, where luxury contrasts with the lack of basic services” (Ambiente, 11/11). It is a good image that symbolizes the inequality caused by income concentration and environmental destruction. We need to show the luxuries and the crap to see if the rich can take notice and stretch their pockets before they succumb along with the poor. This planet is an ocean liner sailing through space without lifeguards. If it continues to be destroyed like this, it will sink.

Presence in Belém
“COP30 will start with 56,000 registrants, 10,000 fewer than at the summit in 2024” (Ambiente, October 11). I’m not sure if this small difference in subscriber numbers compared to the previous edition means much. Possible causes include the cost of accommodation and perhaps logistical difficulties in developing areas with less developed domestic infrastructure. Perhaps what really matters in the end is the effective participation of governments and businesses, who have more money and power to fund the necessary changes.
Aldo Nascimento Jr. (Jundiai, SP)
Analyzing newspaper headlines about COP seems to confirm my initial impressions. Only negative headlines, no positive headlines. In Folha’s view, the meeting was not productive. Purely a waste of time.
Joan Pastina Neto (Pereiras, SP)
mental crisis
“We underestimate mental health” (Michael França, 10/11). Another thought-provoking piece from this excellent columnist. He furthers Freud’s theory that civilization causes oppression and unhappiness by observing this process intensify among the poorest people. Ultimately, his optimism resembles the utopia of philosopher Herbert Marcuse, who believed in the emancipation of humanity through the evolution of technology and the end of capitalism. Optimism and utopia, both.

kanye west
“‘Nobody who defends Nazism will play or sing at SP,’ Nunes says of the Kanye West show” (Monica Bergamo, 10/11). This is an excellent position for the Mayor to take, and I fully support it. However, it is surprising that a black person like the singer, who is part of a group that has historically been persecuted and relegated to the worst conditions of life, would make such racist comments.
Alfred Delati (São João da Boa Vista, SP)
Only those who defend the genocide of Palestinians in Gaza will perform in São Paulo. That’s complete hypocrisy.

bodybuilding
“The Risks of Popularizing Bodybuilding” (Bruno Guarano, 11/11). Pointing out that he is just part of the fabric of the sport and is not acting maliciously, the success of athletes like Ramon Dino of Acre represents the failure of young people who are cruelly encouraged to use drugs with irreversible or fatal side effects, such as anabolic steroids.
