Three Sarmiento freight cars derailed near the liner/NA
Yesterday, three cars of a Sarmiento train set derailed a few meters from the station in Buenos Aires’ Liniere district, injuring at least 20 people, 10 of whom suffered multiple injuries and were taken to different hospitals. The incident has led to a lawsuit and an expert report will be conducted to find out the reasons behind the incident.
As Trenes Argentinos reported at 3:50 p.m., the train from Sarmiento, bound for Once from Moreno, managed to stop in time despite having to take off its shoes and derail during a track change near Riniere. Three vehicles were moved to one side, and information released said the evacuation of passengers was carried out in an “orderly manner”.
The incident prompted a large-scale operation involving Argentine railway workers, Buenos Aires firefighters, 40 Ambulance Ambulances, the Special Rescue Team (GER), a command post, a brigade medical unit, and the Civil Defense.
According to police and medical reports, 10 injured people were treated at the scene and a further 10 were transported with multiple injuries and moderate to complex injuries. Four were referred to Santoyanni Hospital, two to Vélez Sarsfield Hospital, two to general acute care Dr. Teodoro Alvarez, and two to general acute care Dr. C. Grierson. No one shows any seriousness.
Of the total number of injured, two were minors who sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. “The important thing is that there are no deaths that need to be communicated to the next of kin,” SAME director Alberto Crescenti said in a statement to journalists.
However, some passengers described the fear they felt at the moment of the crash. “It was a frightening event. The convoy left in a brutal manner. What I experienced and saw was the panic you experience when something like this happens. It felt like an earthquake. I recorded the screams of women and children and ran frantically forward,” said a worker on the train, describing how it was a miracle the situation did not escalate. “Like all the people there, I think there is another God.”
After a disagreement at the intersection of Timoteo Gordillo and Rivadavia, services were suspended for two hours between Castelal and Moreno, without ever reaching Onse, the terminal where 13 years ago formations on the same line collided and killed 52 people. This tragedy resulted in the Supreme Court yesterday confirming Julio de Vido’s prison sentence (see separate section).
