Digitalization has ushered in a new era of clinical information management that has a direct impact on quality of care, biomedical research, and public policy development. However, the heterogeneity of information resulting from the diversity of public and private systems makes interoperability and secure sharing difficult. In response to this challenge, a medical data space is emerging, as well as efforts to structure, anonymize, and reuse clinical information for both primary (care) and secondary uses (prevention, therapeutic innovation, and public health).
These projects are aligned with the future European Health Data Space (EHDS), which aims to establish a common framework for the secure and ethical flow of clinical data within the European Union. Success essentially depends on strong governance, public trust, and the technological ability to connect disparate systems without creating new digital divides. This opportunity is unique. A well-coordinated ecosystem accelerates the development of personalized treatments, reduces duplication of testing, improves continuity of care, and accelerates responses to health crises.
How can we build an interoperability model for clinical data that combines validity, security, fairness, and social legitimacy? What technical and organizational conditions must be met for the data space to achieve true interoperability? And what should be the role of national regulators in the face of these projects originating from the private sphere? These and other questions will be answered during the event. Medical data space: opportunities and shared challengesOrganized by EL PAÍS and the Institute for Health Development and Integration (IDIS), it will take place this Thursday, 13 November, and will be available to watch live from 11.30am on our website and social networks.
Rosa Roldan, Director of Digital Strategy at IDIS, will be joining the conference. Luisa Bautista management Director and Head of Health at Accenture. and Ángel Blanco, Director of Organization, Process and ICT at Quiron Salud.
