Bildou, Smar and Podemos called on the government of President Pedro Sánchez to correct the mistake of supporting Morocco’s proposed Western Sahara autonomy plan and return to its traditional position supporting the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.
Bildou spokesperson Melche Aizpourua took advantage of Sanchez’s appearance in the parliamentary plenary session to demand that “the Saharawi people must continue to rely on the support that the government has unjustly withdrew,” which, in her opinion, only reinforces “Morocco’s impunity for continuing its illegal occupation” of the region and denies the Saharawi people their right to self-determination.
Against the backdrop of a UN Security Council resolution endorsing, for the first time, the former Spanish colony’s autonomy plan for Morocco, Aizpourua promised to pressure the executive branch to “reconsider” and recalled requesting the presence of Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez in the chamber, which borders the Sahara desert.
Meanwhile, Veronica Barbero, from Smar region, said the opposition was a “mockery” of the European ruling and warned that Spain, out of “memory and political decency”, should recognize the “inalienable right of the Saharawi people” to determine their future and natural resources.
He also stressed that the government cannot celebrate the UN Security Council resolution on US President Donald Trump’s “order” and that Western Sahara’s self-determination is the only path to peace.
Meanwhile, Podemos general secretary Ione Berara told Sanchez that “the time has come to revise” his support for the Rabat plan. He added that the majority of Spanish citizens do not support the president’s position, but rather support the self-determination of the Saharawi people and stop “following the orders of the Moroccan dictatorship.”
