The Federal Regional Health Surveillance Office reported that the man was admitted with suspected methanol poisoning and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Brasilia Hospital. He is said to have bought an opened bottle of vodka at a Jardim Botanico outlet last Sunday (September 11).

The drinks consumed by the man and his friend were recalled as there were no side effects. “Analysis will be carried out to determine whether the drinks have been adulterated or counterfeited,” Marcia Cristina Oribe, director of health surveillance, said in a statement.

Bottles of vodka of the same brand and batch were collected for analysis at a private police crime laboratory.

The hospitalized man informed the DF Health Service (SES-DF) that his friend, who had also consumed small amounts of the same drink, was feeling well and had no serious problems.

As a result of health monitoring, no abnormalities were found at the facility where the drinks were purchased, and the facility plans to continue operating as usual.

The head of the health surveillance department explained, “We will continue to investigate, and if tampering or foreign matter is confirmed, we will take appropriate inspection and recall measures.”

Regular health surveillance inspections will continue to monitor possible fraudulent activities in establishments selling alcoholic beverages in the Federal District. “More than 25,000 irregular alcoholic beverages have been collected by the Health Surveillance Department this year and the activity continues,” Marcia Cristina said.

3rd case with suspected methanol in DF

The Federal District Health Service (SES-DF) confirmed this Tuesday (11/11) that it is investigating a suspected case of methanol poisoning in the capital. This is the third suspected contamination with a substance registered with the DF, the other two have been discarded.

The patient, who has not yet been identified, is admitted to a Brasilia hospital. He was hospitalized after drinking distilled liquor purchased from a beverage vendor. The office is looking for another person who may have ingested the same distillate.

“This case is being monitored by the hospital’s epidemiological surveillance and the collection of confirmatory tests is still being analyzed. An active search is underway for another individual allegedly exposed to the same product,” the memo tells SES-DF (read the full text at the end of the text).

The folder also reported that the DF Health Surveillance Department went to the outlet where the bottles of alcoholic drinks were purchased. “Only one bottle belonging to the same batch was found at the location. The product was collected and sent to the Civil Police Crime Laboratory for analysis,” the office concluded.

We contacted the Brasilia Hospital, but they did not provide any information about the patient.
