US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday (12/11) requesting a pardon for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In excerpts from the letter, the Republican Party emphasizes that after Israel moves past the end of the Gaza war, the Israeli president will consider ending the “judicial war.”

“As the great state of Israel and the great Jewish people navigate the past three extremely difficult years, we ask that you grant a full pardon to Benjamin Netanyahu, a fearsome and decisive wartime prime minister who is now leading Israel into a time of peace, including continued collaboration with key leaders in the Middle East to add more countries to the world-changing Abraham Accords,” Trump’s letter suggests.

Elsewhere, the US president added: “Now that we have achieved unprecedented success and brought Hamas under control, it is time for Bibi to unite Israel, grant her amnesty, and end this judicial war once and for all.”

Trump also tried to intercede with allies in June, calling for a halt to the trial in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is facing corruption charges. At that time, the prime minister suggested pardoning him, but all he could do was postpone the trial.

corruption accusations

In 2019, the prime minister was indicted in an Israeli court on charges of illegally receiving gifts from businessmen. At the time, the value of the gift was more than 1 million reais. In total, Prime Minister Netanyahu has filed at least three lawsuits in Israeli courts.

Authorities allege he received $75,800 worth of cigars and $52,300 worth of champagne. The accusations also include members of the prime minister’s family, including his wife, who are also said to have received jewelry. According to the court, the gifts appear to have been received between 2011 and 2016.
