Jakarta (ANTARA) – Classic cars are often sought after by automotive enthusiasts for the historical value, unique design and nostalgic atmosphere they offer. However, behind this allure, cars that are more than ten years old usually have their own challenges in terms of maintenance. The age of the vehicle is no longer young, making it susceptible to various types of damage, or what is often called “old car disease”.
Here are ten common damages that occur in old cars that you need to be aware of, so that owners can prevent them early and reduce repair costs.
1. The cooling system is leaking
Cooling system leaks are a common cause of overheating (overheating) on old cars. Causes include damage to the thermostat, a broken hose or a worn radiator. Vehicle owners are advised to replace the coolant (refrigerant) every 38,000 km or once every two years to avoid engine damage due to overheating.
2. Components wear out
Pistons, bearings and other engine components can wear with use. This condition can cause oil leaks because the pressure cannot be maintained properly. To avoid this, car owners are advised to regularly change the oil every 10,000 km or every six months and avoid carrying excessive loads.

3. Overheating
Engine overheating is characterized by a dramatic increase in temperature, white smoke billowing from the hood, and sudden engine stalling. The cause could be a leaking radiator, a damaged water pump, or a malfunctioning thermostat. Routine maintenance of the cooling system is the main preventive measure.
4. Damage to the suspension system
Worn suspension makes the car unstable, appears excessive vibrations and produces a metallic noise when driving on rough roads. This damage is usually caused by a weakened shock absorber or bushing. Replacing damaged components and restoring the suspension is a repair solution.
5. Ignition system problems
Worn spark plugs, wires or coils can cause difficulty starting or sudden engine stopping. Regularly checking and replacing ignition components is very important to maintaining your car’s performance.
6. Problems with the lubrication system
Old cars are prone to oil leaks or drops in oil pressure due to a less than optimal lubrication system. It is recommended to use oil with a minimum viscosity of 10W, replace the oil filter as recommended and regularly monitor the oil volume.

7. Problems with the transmission
Transmission damage is characterized by abrupt gear shifts, harsh sounds, or difficulty moving the car. Causes include worn transmission components, dirty transmission fluid, or clutch damage. Maintenance includes regular replacement of transmission fluid and replacement of damaged components.
8. Rust or corrosion
Red-brown spots on the car body indicate rust. Exposure to water, humid air and lack of maintenance are the main causes. Prevention can be done through repainting, repair of damaged bodywork and anti-rust protection.
9. Problems with the electrical system
Age factors make cables, connectors, alternators or engine starters brittle and susceptible to corrosion. To avoid more serious damage, regular inspection of the wires, spark plugs, battery and engine compartment is necessary.
10. Worn braking system
Repeated friction makes the brake pads thin and the braking system is not optimal. Excessive vibrations and reduced brake response are the main signs. Car owners are advised to change the brake fluid every 20,000–30,000 km or every two years and replace the brake linings every 40,000–80,000 km or every 2–3 years.
Through proper maintenance, old cars can still provide a safe and comfortable driving experience. Owners are advised to carry out periodic checks so that the performance of the vehicle is maintained even if it is no longer young.
