Jakarta (ANTARA) – Currently, most motorcycles are equipped with this feature Side stand switch on the side stand. Its function is to protect the engine while providing additional safety when the side stand is down.
At first glance it seems practical, but this habit causes many drivers to choose to turn off the engine simply by lowering the standard, without pressing the switch. In fact, if you do it too often, this habit could risk quickly draining your motorcycle’s battery or even damaging it.
Therefore, understanding the negative impacts, it is important that motorcyclists get used to turning off the engine using the ignition key so that the motorcycle components remain durable and avoid damage.
So what are the negative impacts that occur if the automatic motorcycle is continuously kept off with the side stand? Below is a summary of effects from various sources.

Negative effects of automatically turning off the motorcycle with the side stand
1. Spark plugs can be damaged quickly
Spark plugs are a vital component on a motorcycle because they have the function of regulating the combustion process in the engine. If you turn off your motorcycle with automatic transmission using the side stand too often, the spark plugs can be damaged quickly.
This is caused by a buildup of carbon during the engine’s combustion or warm-up process. To keep it durable, it is best to turn off the engine using the ignition key and clean the spark plugs regularly.
2. Problems with the electrical system
Switching off the engine simply by lowering the side stand can compromise the motorcycle’s electrical system. In fact this system is very important because it is linked to the sensors and switches located on the side rules.
If this habit is allowed, the switch or sensor can wear out quickly, increasing the risk of damage or even accidents. Safer, use the ignition key to turn off the engine before lowering the standard.
3. ECU function (Engine control unit) disturbed
The ECU is the control center of the engine as well as the component that allows the motorcycle to be started. If you are used to turning off the engine with the side stand, the performance of the ECU may be affected. The best solution is to first turn off the engine using the ignition key, then lower the motorcycle’s side stand.

4. Risk of accidents
Using side stands to turn off the engine can be dangerous. The reason is that there is a possibility that the driver forgets to raise it again before driving. This condition can potentially cause accidents, both for the driver himself and for other people on the road. To avoid this, make it a habit to check your standard position before driving and make sure your standard sensors or side indicators are working properly.
5. The battery drains quickly
At first glance it seems trivial, but the habit of turning off the engine using the side stand can cause the battery to drain faster. When the engine is turned off in this way, the electricity remains on even if the engine is turned off.
If left unused for too long, the battery will drain completely, especially on motorcycles that still use halogen lights. Unlike LEDs which are more efficient, using regular lights can drain your battery more quickly if you get into this habit often.
