Jakarta (ANTARA) – In an effort to raise awareness and remember the archipelago’s rich flora and fauna, Indonesia annually commemorates National Puspa and Animal Love Day (HCPSN) on November 5.

The National Day of Puspa and Love of Animals originated from the government policy outlined in Presidential Decree (Keppres) number 4 of 1993 regarding animals and national flowers.

The presidential decree signed by President Soeharto represents an important milestone in the history of Indonesian biodiversity conservation.

The purpose of this day is to increase public awareness about the preservation of Indonesia’s flora and fauna, as well as promote a sense of national pride and responsibility in protecting the natural wealth that constitutes the nation’s identity.

Three types of puspa (flowers) and three types of animals (animals) were also designated as national symbols in the presidential decree. Each has a philosophical meaning based on the character and biodiversity of Indonesia.

1. The three national puspas include:

  • Jasmine flowers (Jasminum sambac) are the national Puspa, symbolizing purity and beauty.
  • Bulan orchid (Phalaenopsis amabilis) in the role of Puspa Pesona, depicts the elegance and natural attraction of Indonesia.
  • The Giant Padma (Rafflesia arnoldii) as a rare Puspa, reflects the uniqueness of Indonesia’s rare and protected flora.

2. The three designated national animals are:

  • Komodo (Varanus komodoensis) as a national animal, represents land animals living only in Indonesia.
  • The Red Siluk Fish (Sclerophages formosus) is an Enchanted Animal, symbol of the beauty of the aquatic fauna of the archipelago.
  • The Javanese eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi) as an endangered animal, is a rare icon living in the forests of Java.

Indonesia is known as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Globally, Indonesia ranks second as the country that has the most biodiversity or is called a country megabiodiversity.

Many species are found only in the archipelago, from rare animals to highly nutritious plants.

The government has also strengthened conservation measures through various regulations, including Government Regulation Number 92 of 2018 on Protected Types of Plants and Animals, which covers 914 types of rare plants and animals.

This step is part of the national commitment to maintain the balance of the ecosystem and ensure that this natural heritage can continue to be enjoyed by future generations.

Google Doodle also celebrates HCPSN 2025

On the 2025 anniversary, Google will also celebrate National Puspa and Animal Love Day by displaying a special Google Doodle on the main search page for Indonesian users.

The doodle features hand-drawn illustrations depicting typical Indonesian flora and fauna from land, sea and air habitats.

Through a colorful display, Google invites the public to learn more about the riches of nature while preserving the biodiversity of the archipelago.

By celebrating HCPSN 2025, it is hoped that more people will get involved in environmental conservation efforts, starting from small steps like planting trees, not littering, to advocating for policies to protect rare animals and plants.
