Jakarta (ANTARA) – Brake fluid is a fundamental component of the motorcycle braking system. Its function is very important to maintain optimal brake performance, especially when the motorcycle is driving at high speed or on downhill roads.
If not replaced in time, this condition could jeopardize driver safety. Here are five major signs that your motorcycle brake fluid needs immediate attention and replacement.
5 signs that your motorcycle’s brake fluid is running low and needs to be replaced
1. A grinding or squeaking noise when you apply the brakes
Squeaking or squeaking sounds are not only caused by worn seals, but also often occur due to lack of lubrication in the brake system due to low brake fluid levels.
2. Brake response is looser or weak
The brakes feel “soft”, deeper when pressed or braking response decreases. This is usually caused by the hydraulic pressure being suboptimal due to reduction in oil volume or quality.

3. The color of the brake fluid changes to cloudy or dark
New brake fluid is usually clear/light yellow. If it turns brown to black, this indicates contamination from dirt, water or metal particles.
4. The brake fluid level in the reservoir drops below the minimum line
Check the brake fluid hose periodically. If the volume drops below the minimum level, even if there are no visible leaks, it means that the oil is running low and should be topped up or replaced immediately.
5. Air bubbles appear in the pipe or plumbing system
If you notice bubbles in the brake hose when checking or filling, there is probably air in the system. This causes a “spongy” effect and can reduce braking effectiveness.

Danger if not replaced
• Brakes may not work when needed because hydraulic pressure is disturbed by air or poor oil quality.
• Brake components such as rubber seals, pistons and calipers can become damaged due to corrosion or unlubricated friction.
• Extreme heat effects (brake fade) may occur if the oil has been contaminated with water, lowering its boiling point and forming vapor which can reduce braking.
The ideal time to change the brake fluid
• It is recommended to change the brake fluid every 1-2 years, or if the motorcycle has traveled 10,000–25,000 km, depending on the type of motorcycle and type of use.
• If the motorcycle is often used in an extreme manner (steep climbs and descents, damaged roads, brakes are often used heavily), the consideration should be to replace them sooner, even if they are less than a year old.
Maintaining the quality and quantity of your motorcycle’s brake fluid is an important part of maintaining safe riding. If you experience one or more of the signs explained above, replace it immediately.
Driving safety does not only depend on the condition of the engine or tires, but also on an excellent braking system. Don’t wait until it’s too late, make sure all brake components are in good condition for a safe and comfortable ride.
