Jakarta (ANTARA) – American basketball player John Wall has officially announced his retirement from the NBA after 11 seasons of career. The 34-year-old point guard finished his career in the world’s most prestigious basketball league averaging 18.7 points, 8.9 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game in 647 regular season games.
Wall made the official announcement via his personal social media account on Tuesday (8/19), local time. In uploading in the form of a retrospective video titled “Retired but never done it. I do it #WallWay”Wall stressed that even if he retired from the court, he would still be involved in the world of basketball.
“Today I walk off the court, but not away from the game. Basketball will always be in my life and new opportunities will present themselves. I feel now is the time to confidently step into my next chapter,” Wall said, quoted from his official Instagram.
Wall is widely known as one of the most explosive point guards of his time. The Washington Wizards selected him with the first pick in the 2010 NBA Draft after playing just one season at the University of Kentucky. He then played for the Wizards for a decade (2010–2020) before joining the Houston Rockets (2020–2022) and the Los Angeles Clippers (2022–2023).

The player born in Raleigh, North Carolina, won five NBA titles All-Star and join the team Third team all-NBA in the 2016/2017 season, when he averaged 23.1 points and 10.7 assists per game. In the same season he also led the league in steals. Besides that, Wall won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in 2014 and was part of the team Second all-defensive team in 2015.
However, Wall’s career has not been free of serious injuries, including an Achilles tendon injury in 2019, which kept him out of action for a long time. In the last six seasons he has never played more than half of the scheduled games. His last appearance was recorded in January 2023 with the Clippers.
Even so, his contributions to the Wizards cannot be forgotten. Wall became the team’s primary moto in four appearances playoffsincluding leading Washington to the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2017.
Before entering the NBA, Wall had been known since his high school days at Word of God Christian Academy, Raleigh, with a reputation as one of the best players in the class of 2009. His popularity continued while he played for Kentucky, before finally becoming the top pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.
After Wall officially retired, there is now virtually only Paul George left as an active player from the 2010 NBA Draft.
