Jakarta (ANTARA) – Sport is not just physical activity. Every drop of sweat reflects the passion, discipline and hard work that is part of the journey to becoming the best version of yourself.
National Sports Day (Haornas), which falls on September 9, is an important time to encourage people to rise up and rekindle their fighting spirit in everyday life.
Through sports, a person can learn the meaning of discipline, the spirit of never giving up, and develop mental and physical strength.
The precursor of Haornas
The origin of National Sports Day dates back to 1948, when Indonesia wanted to take part in the 14th Olympic Games in London, England.
However, at that time Britain had not fully recognized Indonesia’s independence, so Indonesian athletes were administratively rejected.
They could only participate if they used a Dutch passport, but the athletes rejected this as a form of maintaining national pride.
Based on this event, the President of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX, together with the Indonesian Sports Association, held the National Sports Week (PON) for the first time on September 9, 1948 in the city of Surakarta, Central Java.
