Jakarta (ANTARA) – Hindu communities in various parts of the world are celebrating Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, these days. This celebration is synonymous with twinkling lamps, fireworks and an atmosphere full of warmth and prayer.

Although Diwali originates from the Hindu traditions of India, it turns out that this celebration is also celebrated in many other countries. In various places like Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia and Australia, people celebrate Diwali.

Diwali is a symbol of the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. Interestingly, each country has its own way of interpreting and celebrating this sacred day.

So, what exactly is Diwali festival? Apart from this, which countries other than India celebrate Diwali? See the explanation and list below, based on information gathered from various sources.

What is Diwali?

The celebration of Deepavali or better known as Diwali is one of the greatest festivals of light celebrated every year by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists in various parts of the world.

This year, this sacred moment will take place from Monday, October 20 to Tuesday, October 21, 2025. This holiday symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

The term Deepavali itself comes from Sanskrit, where the words “deepa” means clay lamp, while “avali” means a row or line that describes the typical atmosphere of this celebration which is full of lights aligned beautifully in every house and street.

7 countries besides India celebrate Diwali 2025

1.Indonesia

In Indonesia, Diwali celebrations are lively, especially among the Indian diaspora in cities like Jakarta, Medan and Bali. Even if it is celebrated by a particular community, the atmosphere is also felt by the surrounding community.

Group prayers, musical performances, classical dances and culinary festivals are usually held in Indian temples and cultural centers. Especially in Bali, where the majority of the population is Hindu, Diwali combines with local traditions, creating a unique celebration that combines Indian and Indonesian cultures.

2.Nepal

In Nepal, the Diwali celebration is known as Tihar and is one of the biggest festivals after Dashain. The government declared Tihar a national holiday for five consecutive days.

Every day has a special meaning, from respect for animals like cows and dogs, to a special day to strengthen the relationship between brothers and sisters.

3. Malaysia

In Malaysia, Deepavali is declared a public holiday in several states such as Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor and Negeri Sembilan. However, in some regions with a dominant non-Hindu population, celebrations do not always take place officially. Despite this, Deepavali still retains a lively atmosphere in areas with a large Indian community, characterized by colorful lights and the scent of traditional food.

4.Singapore

The Singapore government has also declared Deepavali a national holiday. Every year the Little India area is transformed into a sea of light with magnificent decorations, colored lights and various typical bazaars. Hindus flock to temples to pray, while the general public enjoys traditional sweets and lively cultural performances.

5. Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, the Diwali celebration known as Deepawali is one of the most important festivals for Tamil Hindus. This celebration lasts five days, with the tradition of lighting oil lamps, praying at temples and gathering with families to share food and pray for thanks. The atmosphere of Sri Lanka during Diwali is full of light, color and unity.

6. Thailand

In Thailand, Diwali is celebrated with the name Loi Krathong, which means “floating basket”. This festival takes place on the full moon night of the 12th month according to the Thai calendar. Residents light candles on small boats drifting down the river, accompanied by fireworks displays, boat parades and enchanting cultural events.
