Jakarta (ANTARA) – Every October 24, the world community commemorates United Nations (UN) Day.
This commemoration marks the founding of the United Nations on 24 October 1945, after the United Nations Charter was ratified by a majority of member states, including the five permanent members of the Security Council on 26 June 1945.
So, what is the story of the founding of the largest international organization in the world? Check the following information.
History of the founding of the United Nations
The idea of the United Nations (UN) was first put forward on January 1, 1942 by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the then American president, through a historic statement called the Declaration of the United Nations.
This declaration was implemented during World War II and involved 26 countries who promised to work together against the Axis bloc – a coalition between Germany, Italy and Japan – which at that time was the opponent of the Allied bloc.
In October 1944, the Dumbarton Oaks Conference was held in Washington DC, USA, in which Great Britain, the Soviet Union and China participated.
During the meeting, the formation of a new organization that should replace the role of the League of Nations (LBB) was discussed.
The LBB itself is a pacifist organization formed after the end of the First World War. However, due to its failure to prevent the outbreak of World War II, the LBB was disbanded in 1919 through the Treaty of Versailles.

Furthermore, in April-June 1945, delegates from 50 countries gathered at the United Nations Conference in San Francisco to formulate the United Nations Charter.
After a month-long process, the Charter of the United Nations was born, ratified by 50 supporting countries on 26 June 1945 and officially entered into force on 24 October 1945.
The birth of the United Nations Charter also marked the official establishment of the United Nations as an international organization which has four main objectives:
- Maintain international peace and security;
- Develop friendly relations between nations;
- Achieve international cooperation in solving international problems; AND
- Become a center for aligning countries’ actions in achieving common goals.
