Jakarta (ANTARA) – Raising freshwater lobsters may seem simple, but in reality many beginners fail because these animals are quite sensitive to the environment.
Starting from poor water quality, inappropriate feeding, to stress due to incorrect management, everything can lead to lobsters dying quickly. In order for cultivation to proceed smoothly and the survival rate of lobsters to increase, it is important to understand the factors that cause it and the right way to prevent this problem.
Below are reasons why freshwater lobsters die easily and how to prevent it, based on information gathered from various sources.
The reason why laughing water lobsters die easily
1. Unstable water quality
Many beginners often ignore the pH factor, although changes in pH values too far between the lobster’s place of origin and new media can pose a serious threat. For example, lobsters that previously lived at a pH of 5.6 and then are moved to water with a pH of 7.5 may experience great stress. This too sudden adaptation often leads to death.
As a reference, the pH difference for freshwater biota should be no more than 1.0. Therefore, check the pH in your seller’s pond and your home grow pond, then gradually adjust it before placing the lobster in its new medium.
2. Lobsters experience pressure or stress
Stress is the leading cause of death for freshwater lobsters, especially large ones. When stressed, lobsters usually stop eating, their bodies weaken and therefore they cannot survive.
The signs can be seen by passive behavior, always hiding in dark areas or moving unnaturally. Therefore, it is important to recognize stress triggers as early as possible, because this condition directly reduces the resistance and productivity of lobsters.
3. Fail mute (Changes skin)
Error during processing mute often occurs when the shell is too hard, which is usually affected by poor water quality, stressful conditions and lack of nutrients from the feed. In phase mutelobsters secrete fluids from their bodies that can attract the attention of other lobsters. If the population is too dense, this condition can cause attacks by others and increase the risk of death.
4. Bacterial infection
Lobsters also pose a threat due to bacteria Aeromonas. These microorganisms can attack at any time, even in experienced growers. Features can be seen at the tip of the lobster’s tail, as if there was a burn or tissue damage.
Bacterial attacks usually occur when the lobster’s body is weak. The dirty and rarely clean environment of the bottom of the pond is the main factor, because the friction of the tail with mud or residual dirt opens opportunities for the infection to penetrate the lobster’s body.
How to deal with freshwater lobsters that die easily
1. Maintain stable water quality
One of the main ways to prevent the death of freshwater lobsters is to prepare the water well before introducing the animals. Ideally, the water is treated at least 7 days in advance until it reaches a neutral pH of 6.5 to 7.0 and maintained for several days.
You can use pH buffer through a filtration system or directly added to the aquarium or pond. Some farmers also use ketapang leaves as a natural ingredient to stabilize pH and create a comfortable aquatic environment for lobsters.
2. Disease management in lobsters
Efforts to prevent infection are made by ensuring that the bottom of the culture media is always clean. This is important because lobsters stay on the bottom more often than swimming.
The cleaning process can be carried out using a vacuum cleaner, since normal filters only filter the upper water, so that residual dirt and feed often remain deposited. With a clean pool bottom, the risk of injury or bacterial infection can be minimized.
3. Provide nutritious food
High-quality food has a great influence on the lobster’s immune system. Complete nutrition helps them grow optimally, be more resistant to disease and not get stressed easily. Besides that, providing the right feed ensures that the lobster has enough energy to undergo natural processes such as mute.
4. Reduce the risk of failure mute
To help the moulting process proceed correctly, lobsters must be protected from environmental stress. When you see the signs muteit should be moved to a special place (quarantine) without changing the type of water used, and adding an adequate supply of oxygen from an aerator.
To prevent lobster attacks, ensure the availability of shelter or shelters enough for all individuals and manage pool density well.
These are several measures that can be taken to maintain the health of freshwater lobsters and prevent the high risk of death. Understanding important aspects such as water quality, disease prevention, food selection and handling mutethe success of cultivation will be even greater.
Proper care from the beginning not only keeps lobsters alive, but also promotes optimal growth and more profitable growing results.
