Jakarta (ANTARA) – Global university ranking agency, QS Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), released the latest list of QS Asia University Rankings (AUR) 2026 on Tuesday (11/4).
In this list there are a number of Indonesian private universities that have managed to achieve results by entering the ranking of the best universities in Asia.
Out of a total of 1,530 universities in 25 higher education systems listed, eight Indonesian private campuses managed to make it into the prestigious top list.
The following are the eight best private campuses in Indonesia according to the QS Asia University Rankings 2026:
1. Bina Nusantara University (BINUS University)
Occupying the first position as the best private university in Indonesia, BINUS University ranked 165th in Asia with a score of 56.4.
This campus, which is located in Jakarta, is known for excelling in the fields of information technology, business and digital innovation.
BINUS results this year also surpassed several renowned state universities, such as Sebelas Maret University (ranked 168th) and Hasanuddin University (ranked 201st).
2. Telkom University (Telkom University)
In second place, Telkom University or Tel-U, which is based in Bandung, ranked 257th in Asia with a score of 43.9.
This ranking shows an increase from the previous year and currently places Telkom University above the Indonesian University of Education (ranking 391).
This campus is also known for excellence in the fields of technology, digital business and innovative research.
3. Indonesian Catholic University Atma Jaya
Also from a private campus in Jakarta, Indonesian Catholic University Atma Jaya is ranked 439th in Asia with a score of 32.4.
Although the score is quite different from that of Telkom University, Atma Jaya has a score not much different from that of Yogyakarta State University which achieved a score of 33.3.
4. North Sumatra Muhammadiyah University (UMSU)
From Medan, Muhammadiyah University of North Sumatra recorded results ranking 445th in Asia with a score of 32.1.
UMSU is the first university in Muhammadiyah to be included in the QS AUR 2026 list. This demonstrates its commitment to improving the quality of education outside Java.
5. Nusantara Multimedia University (UMN)
Additionally, Multimedia Nusantara University (UMN), located in Tangerang, is ranked 474th in Asia with an overall score of 30.6.
Known as a campus of excellence in the fields of communications and creative technology, UMN often reinforces its reputation as a university focused on innovation and digital industry.
6. Indonesian Islamic University (UII)
Indonesia’s oldest private campus, the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) in Yogyakarta, managed to rank 507th in Asia with a score of 29.4.
It is known that UII has made a major contribution to the development of education based on modern Islamic values and globally competitive.
7. Petra Christian University (Petra in the UK)
Located in Surabaya, Petra Christian University was ranked 526th in Asia with a score of 28.7.
This campus is known for its excellence in the fields of architecture, design and business. This ranking strengthens UK Petra’s position as one of the leading private universities in eastern Indonesia.
8. Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY)
In eighth position, Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta (UMY) is also ranked 526th in Asia with a score of 28.7. Same chart position and score as Petra in the UK.
However, the comparison between the two is that Petra Christian University is ranked 1401+ in the QS World University Rankings, while Yogyakarta Muhammadiyah University is ranked 1201-1400.
After North Sumatra, the Yogyakarta region is the second Muhammadiyah campus to be included in the 2026 QS AUR list.
QS AUR 2026 evaluation indicators
The QS Asia University Rankings 2026 has been compiled to provide a comprehensive picture of university performance in various aspects. The evaluation is based on four main categories:
- Research and Discovery (45%): Includes academic reputation, citations per article, and number of articles by faculty.
- Employability and results (20%): includes the reputation of the employer.
- Global Engagement (20%): Includes international research networks, international faculty ratio, international student ratio, incoming exchange student ratio, and outgoing exchange student ratio.
- Learning experience (15%): Includes faculty to student ratio and number of staff with doctoral (PhD) degrees.
