What is the law on sleeping without clothes according to Islam? This is the explanation

Jakarta (ANTARA) – For some people, sleeping naked is one of the most comfortable habits to rest, keep your body temperature cool and sleep better.

However, in Islamic teachings, this issue is not only about convenience, but also about etiquette, honor and the limits of private parties regulated by Shari’a.

Islam teaches to protect the private parts as part of the honor and shame that must be preserved at all times. In Surah Al-Qur’an Al-A’raf verse 26, Allah SWT says:

“O sons and grandsons of Adam, indeed We have sent down to you robes to cover your private parts and your feathers…”

This verse emphasizes that clothing has the main function of protecting private parts and body hair.

Therefore, if someone sleeps naked and has the potential to be seen by other people who are not mahrams, this is not allowed in Islam.

Even when dealing with people of the same sex, it is recommended to maintain the boundaries of the private parts so as not to cause anything inappropriate.

Some scholars, then, believe that a Muslim is still obliged to cover his private parts even when he is alone in his room. This opinion is based on the words of Prophet Muhammad SAW:

“Take care of your private parts except that of your wife and the slaves you have.” (HR. Abu Dawud, n. 4017)

Covering your private parts in front of people and when you are alone is a form of shame that is part of your faith, because Allah SWT sees everything at all times.

Besides maintaining your private parts and showing good manners, sleeping modestly dressed is believed to bring blessings and inner peace.

Every small act done with the intention of maintaining adab can be worth worshiping in the eyes of Allah SWT.

However, Islam makes special exceptions for married couples who sleep naked.

In domestic relationships, sleeping naked is absolutely allowed, because it can increase the intimacy of the couple. This is in accordance with the words of Allah SWT in Surah Al-Mu’minun verses 5–6:

“And those who guard their private parts, except the wives or slaves they own, are truly blameless in this matter.”

This verse explains that between husband and wife there are no restrictions on private parts, because both are halal towards each other.

However, in this condition, the husband and wife still need to maintain etiquette, i.e. close the door, turn off the lights and make sure no one else in the room can see.

In Surah An-Nur verse 58, Allah SWT also explains the etiquette of asking permission from family members or other people before entering someone’s room, especially at these three special times:

  • Before Fajr prayer, because usually someone is still in bed;
  • During qailulah (nap time), when clothes are usually removed;
  • After the Isha prayer, which is the time for night rest.

By maintaining the etiquette and boundaries taught by Islam, even simple activities such as sleeping can be a reflection of faith and a form of self-respect.
