Brazilian Gabriel Bortleto (Sauber) was forced to make a pit start at this Sunday’s Autodromo de Interlagos after failing to qualify after a serious crash during Saturday’s sprint race. The driver, who was competing in his first F1 Grand Prix in his home country, didn’t even have time to get excited. It was only the first lap, and right after the start he collided with Lance Stroll (Aston Martin) and crashed into the wall, forcing him to retire from the race due to a breakdown.
Then the safety car had to be activated.
Cold showers were showered not only on the drivers and teams (who had to get their cars back), but also on Brazilians who carried posters with Bortleto’s photo and Brazilian flags. This is the first time a Brazilian has raced in F1 at home since 2017, the last time being Felipe Massa.
