“They destroyed the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to build a four-lane highway for environmentalists. It’s a huge scandal,” Trump said.
President Trump’s comments came in response to a video by US broadcaster Fox News covering COP30 in Belem. In the recording, reporters criticize Brazil, claiming that Environment Minister Marina Silva “bragged about cutting down thousands of trees to build this four-lane road for COP30 to show how the government manages its forests.”
Lula and Trump
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said last Tuesday (April 11) that he would call US President Donald Trump again if a meeting between the two teams is not scheduled by the end of the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).
“After COP30 ends, if a meeting between my negotiators and his negotiators is not yet scheduled, I will call Mr. Trump again,” Lula stressed.
“I left the meeting with President Trump confident that an agreement would be reached. (…) I told him that it is very important that the negotiators start talks soon,” the PT member added.
Lula and Trump met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on October 26. The meeting lasted 50 minutes and symbolized the growing closeness between the two countries following the diplomatic crisis and the imposition of tariffs on Brazil. After the meeting, the leaders ordered teams from Brazil and the United States to begin negotiations on sanctions.
