Governor Gavin Newsom of the US state of California made a surprise visit to São Paulo on his way to the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP30 in Belém. Following his political victory in the United States, where he succeeded in redrawing California’s electoral districts by popular vote in a move favorable to the Democratic Party, he sought to become acquainted with Lina Bo Bardi’s work Sesc Pompeia.
Newsom was at the Brutalist architect’s complex at the São Paulo Museum of Fine Arts in Maspu, west of São Paulo, on Sunday afternoon. The former mayor of San Francisco was intrigued by the fact that a reflecting pool in one of the cultural center’s main galleries is named after the same saint, according to people who attended the visit.
Currently one of Donald Trump’s biggest opponents in the United States and one of his party’s main bets in the upcoming White House race, he was also scheduled to visit Casa de Vidro in Morumbi, the home of the architect and her husband Pietro Maria Baldi, but the visit was canceled due to traffic congestion in São Paulo.
