Madrid November 9 (Europe Press) –
At least 11 people were hospitalized and dozens sustained minor injuries after two trains collided in southwestern Slovakia on Sunday, authorities said.
Train REX 1814 (from Nitra to Bratislava) collided head-on with train Ex 620 after leaving Pežinok station. Railway services and routes will be disrupted.
Slovak Railways Director Ivan Bednarik blamed the accident on one of the trains for ignoring a red light.
Interior Minister Matusz Stagi Estok confirmed the hospitalization of 11 people, all in hospitals in the capital Bratislava, while Prime Minister Roberto Fico called an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers this Monday morning due to the train accident.
“There are no records of fatalities. This is good news, considering the situation left at the scene of the accident,” Minister Stagi Estoi said of the crash scene, where more than 60 police officers, more than 70 professional and volunteer firefighters and dozens of rescue workers were at the scene.
